Steemblr; The #1Micro-blogging Steem dapp for both Steem and Non-Steem Users

in #utopian-io5 years ago (edited)

Every dapp on steemit aims to grow the steemit community by recruiting new members to the steem blockchain. Every dapp with its own usecase and website with steemit as a front end. Most of these dapps concentrate on recruiting people straight to the steem blockchain, and no room for non-steem users. This is in no way wrong although it would be nice if non-steem users could also interact with steem users and see what an amazing community we are.

There is a singled out dapp on this aspect. It has created room for both steem and non-steem users to interact for the purpose of creating a more social environment. Although the non-steem users will lack major benefits of the blockchain, they are fully involved in the social aspect (posting, liking and commenting). This dapp is Steemblr.

What is Steemblr

Steemblr is open source microblogging platform powered by steem blockchain. It allows the user to post and explore content which is smaller than a traditional blog.

At the initial stages when the platform was created by @snwolak, it was basically for steem users only. The addition of non-steem users sign up through email was implemented 3 months ago. Since the implementation of this feature, the steemblr platform interacts with the steem blockchain in quite a different way so it can allocate for the non-steem users.
It uses firebase storage to store the data and activities of non-steem users while it sends the data and activities of steem users to the steem blockchain. Below I will give some major features which both steem users and non-steem users enjoy and those the non-steem users are deprived of.

Steemblr Interface

  • The Landing Page
    When you visit https://steemblr.com for the first time, you are given the option to login or sign up. The login comes with a steemconnect login for steem users and the email login for non-steem users. The signup page comes with only a sign up for non-steem users. Steemblr is yet to implement a direct sign up to steemit on the platform.

  • The Home Page

Screenshot_20190315-133450.jpg

The home page shows posts that were made through steembr
according to the time it was posted. At the top of the home page screen, you see the different options for the type of posts you can make on steemblr. Steemblr takes 15% beneficiary reward for any post which is made through the platform to help fund further development. There are currently 5 types of posts you can make on steemblr;

  • Text: This is for blogs that do not contain any kind of media file, just texts.
  • Images: This is for posts that the only media file is an image.
  • Quotes: This option is excluded from the 15% beneficiary reward which steemblr takes. The quote post page is made up of Title, Body, Source, and Tags.
  • Audio: This section only supports audio links of SoundCloud and YouTube.
  • Video: This post option only supports YouTube videos. ( It would be amazing if this section could also support dtube videos. This will help promote the mainstream of steem dapps and adoption of the steem blockchain in general).

Post Body

The post body comes with some features that differ for steem users and non-steem users. Some of these features include;

  • Likes: Two different operations are carried out on this button. When a non-steem users likes a post, if it is the post of a steem user, no money is added to the post balance and this operation is stored in a firebase data storage. Same applies when it is vice versa, when a steem user likes a non-steem users post, it is also not recorded on the blockchain and it does not affect the voting power.

When a steem user likes the post of another steemian, the action is sent to the steem blockchain where it is registered and displays an additional value to the post balance. To set your voting weight, you click on the menu box and you will see a slider for you to set your vote weight.

  • Reblogging: This allows you share the post of another user to your blog. Unlike how steemit works, the post you are reblogging is included in your new blog. It works just like the quoted tweet on twitter. Also the original author of the reblogged post gets to take a 47.5% beneficiary from post reward. I would say this is rather on the high side and might not be encouraging to do at all. This can only be well adopted in a system with a very large reward pool where you can be sure of tangible upvotes on any reblog you make.

The reblogging feature is only available to steem users now, although I feel it will also be a needed feature for the non-steem users, where it might even be more effective since there is no reward to share.

  • Permlink
    This will take you to the blog of that user, and display the profile and that post you clicked the permlink. To see other posts of the user on the users blog, you click on posts.

  • Follow
    When a non-steem user clicks the follow button, it only registers on the firebase storage of steemblr. But when a steem user follows a fellow steem user, the action is sent to the steem blockchain and registered. Steemblr has no page where you can access the list of your followers and those you are following. I already created an issue on this last month and the project owner had already confirmed that it is being worked on for future updates.

  • The Explore Page
    You click on the Navigation icon to go to your explore page. The explore page is categorised into;
  • New
  • Trending
  • Text
  • Images
  • gif
  • Audio
  • Video.

Steemblr tries to filter contents that may be +18 or indecent through the NSFW tags, so you can set your NSFW button to either display or hide contents in the NSFW tag.

Problems Facing Steemblr

  • The idea of making the platform for both steem and non steem users is kind of smart, as non-steem users will most likely get drawn by the rewards they see on blogs of steem users and may show interest in joining. Right now, steemblr has no direct sign up button. Switching sites to perform the sign up to steem operation may bring about some issues. Steemit might seem foreign to them as most of the terms and operations on steemblr look different from steemit.

  • Steemblr is an amazing platform with a smart brain behind it. But it has not had any proper marketing and very few people know about the platform. If it could undergo proper marketing and publicizing, and many get to know about it, I think it will be well adopted. It might even attract some investors or whales with sp which will indirectly boost posting on the platform.

Conclusion

Like I already stated at the beginning, I think Steemblr is quite unique for it's involvement of non-steem users with steem-users, doing the same activities but getting different outcomes. I am not aware of any other steem dapp that supporrs posting and commenting for both steem users and non-steem users. Although there might be, I am open to hear you out in the comment section. I've come to have some interest in the platform and I recently offered to help the developer create the FAQ and ABOUT pages of the platform which he accepted gratefully. I'm thinking of having some fun with the platform.

Hi tony-duke,

Thank you for your contribution. Steemblr is another decent project on the Steem blockchain. I like its simplicity and how the PO allow 'non-Steem' users to participate in the platform.

I appreciate the information you provided about the project. The uses, functions and the few thought. However, I have a few issues with it.

First, your first sentence has an error. Steemit itself is a Dapp. It should be ''Every Dapp on Steem.'' Also, your second sentence is unclear. I think the use of ''recruit'' for new Steem users is improper. Not that it's entirely wrong, but it might depict another meaning to readers. You could use a simple word as-bring in more users to the blockchain. Simple and clear.

Lastly, there were proofreading issues throughout. I'd recommend an in-depth check of your future contribution. Grammarly is also a useful tool that spots minor grammar issues.

Thank you!

I upvoted your contribution because to my mind your post is at least 12 SBD worth and should receive 363 votes. It's now up to the lovely Steemit community to make this come true.
