The Curious Expedition - Greek Translation Part. 37

Current Session

Guess what I have for you today? Yep! Another translation for The Curious Expedition! This is the 37th contribution for this project, bringing me to the completion of approximately 45 % of the project.

Finally, after all this time of me crunching string after string, there's seems to be a small ray of hope that I will indeed one day finish this humongous project:

not bad.png
Things don't look so bad anymore, still, there's a long way to go!

Remember, this project is almost 90.000 words big! Will I make it before the end of 2018? I sure hope so!

Now, enough with the mumbling. For this session, I chose a mix of strings from many different game files to keep things spiced and fun. They are the ones that have a bit of blue color in the picture above, with blue indicating the percentage of strings that have yet to be approved by a proof reader.

Like always, here are a couple of them to give you an idea of what I am dealing with. Most of them are picked from the "Mod:Apes" file, which is the most fun one to translate if you ask me :

[Time to celebrate with a drink!|hicks|Cheers!|Let's have a Bananaschnapps!]

[Finally, civilised Apes again.|Everybody relax, I'm back.|Everything seems so different.|Glad to be back.]

$He lived a long [happy|humble|quiet] life and died in the presence [of $his family|of $his scheming spouse|of $his ungrateful grandchildren|of a court shaman|of $his faithful pet].

[Whatever.|I don't even care.|I hope you are happy now.|Feeling like a hero?]

Golden Skull

As you can see, it's a simple and relatively fun translation. And like most of the times, I inserted my very own original strings here and there, since the developers give us the liberty to do so in the guidelines they have provided.

To give you an example of what I mean, here's one such case. The original string goes like:

"[Thank you!|I'm overwhelmed!|So kind of you!|Thanks!|Oh, this is simply superb!|How marvellous!|This is wonderful!]"

And here's my translation

[Σας ευχαριστώ!|Συγκινήθηκα!|Τόσο ευγενικό εκ μέρους σας!|Ευχαριστώ!|Ω, αυτό είναι απλά τέλειο!|Εξαίσια!|Αυτό είναι υπέροχο!| Θα κλάψω ρε μπαγάσες!]

As you can see, I have added a Greek translation that doesn't appear in the original English string: "Θα κλάψω ρε μπαγάσες!"

Given the context of the game, it fits the narrative (it's a celebration party) perfectly. The closest english translation I can think of is something like "Oh, I'll cry you fu**ers!", with the only difference being that the word "μπαγάσες" is a Greek slang work that is not offensive at all, regardless of the context being used. It's something like "buddy", but I don't think there is something really equivalent in the English language.

I usually add 3-5 original strings like the one above in my translations. Sometimes more, sometimes less. It really depends on the strings I am dealing with. In most cases, they just pop up in my head randomly and they tend to be really fun and fitting with the context provided.

Ok, I think I have said too much. I doubt anybody other than my LMs read these stuff anyway.... So, I will close with the same way I have been closing all my latest translation posts, and that is by sharing a small taste of the music I enjoyed while preparing this contribution:

Project Details

The Curious Expedition is a rogue-like expedition simulation set in the 19th century. It's the first game by indie developer Maschinen-Mensch. The game is available on Steam, GOG, Humble Store and at the official homepage http://curious-expedition.com. The game has been regularly updated through out the last 2 years. A list of all the updates can be found here. For information on modding the game, go here . [source and more info]

Gameplay

And here's what I believe to be the official trailer:

Why Did I Choose This Project?

Well, to be honest, I chose this project because all the other options were applications with boring names like Freecad and Jabref. I thought it would be fun (edit: less boring) to translate a game instead. And thank god... I was right!

I am sure my team members are very jealous that I get to translate strings like "Let's eat", "Giant tortoise", "I feel happy and sad", and "Oh my god" while they get to translate stuff like "resolving duplicate keys", "Port Design", "Constraining modifier key" and "Corrugated elements"... LOL!

Too bad for them, now they have to live with the choices they have made....MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

Contribution Specifications

  • Translation Overview: This is a really large project, approximately 80.000 words and obviously it's gonna take me a while to finish. In each part I plan to translate anywhere from 700 to 1200 words. For the most part, the translation is very easy as there are few, if any, technical terms.
  • Languages: The project is being translated from English to Greek.
  • Word Count: According to Crowdin, for Part 37# I translated 1145 words, for a total of 37561 translated words. Since most of the strings translated were part of the in-game dialogues there were only a handful (1, maybe 2%) that were left in the original language, e.g. screenshot.

First I'd like to thank our very helpful and patient LMs, @dimitrisp and @ruth-girl for being awesome.

A shout-out goes of course to the other brilliant members of the Greek team: @katerinaramm, @lordneroo and of course the one and only @trumpman. A special shoutout of course goes to @trumpman2, I would be nothing without his constant support and guidance!

And last but not least, a big thank you goes to DaVinci and Utopian for keeping this project alive, running and developing!
