How Did I Become A Vegan? 🌱

in #vegan6 years ago (edited)

Adopting a vegan diet hasn’t always been something I’ve been interested in, not until a few years ago. Even though I’ve always very much enjoyed eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, I was one of those people thinking vegans can’t get enough protein (shame on me), and let’s just say that I was very suspicious towards the lifestyle.

Around two years ago I started to educate myself more about nutrition, and the impact it has on our environment. While doing that, every time I ate meat, I felt guilty, I felt like I was cheating for not doing my best to make a change. Therefore, my first step was to leave red meat out of my diet, I never enjoyed it that much anyway. After making the decision of giving up on red meat, for a while, I stopped educating myself, I guess subconsciously I knew that if I kept on reading, I’d had to make a bigger a change I wasn’t ready for. Then a little over a year ago, I went back to educating myself about the nutrition and the environment, the water usage, the deforestation, the soil erosion, the greenhouse gas emissions etc. One night, I felt so bad that I decided to leave animal products once and for all. All the remaining animal products in my fridge and pantry I gave away to friends and family, and started off cold turkey.

So, we could say that my reasons to go vegan were purely environmental, at the time I didn’t really care that much about animal rights (harsh to admit, but I wish to be honest with you). Since I was a little girl, I’ve had an ambitious goal to save the world, and at the moment, I feel going vegan is my way to act upon that manner.

Only after having left animal products, I started to educate myself about animal rights. I was shocked to know how badly animals are treated, even in my precious home country, where everything ought to be so excellent and advanced. At this point I knew there was no turning back. So, an answer to a question I get asked regularly, do I miss or crave some animal products, is no, I get shivers only when I think about eating them. I only wish there were more choice of vegan ice creams. So, if someone is thinking about building a new company making vegan ice creams (I very much prefer ice cream cones), I’ll be your number one customer!

Now I’ve said a lot about my devoted vegan diet, but how about my everyday lifestyle? My clothes, my cosmetics? Well, I have to admit I could do better. I have some old leather products, one pair of shoes, gloves and a belt, of which I use all. I don’t see the point in throwing good, usable clothes/accessories away and buying new ones. Of course, I could donate them to someone and buy new ones too, but I’m quite ok with wearing them, so I do, despite the fact someone would call me a bad vegan. When it comes to cosmetics, I don’t really buy any, I just take everything from my sister, since she buys stuff, and doesn’t like them, so automatically, they become mine. So, my cosmetics probably aren’t usually guilty-free either. However, if I were to buy cosmetics myself, I’d go for the guilty-free options, there are more and more of them everyday!

I was thinking about writing about the pros and cons of veganism, but I feel this post is long enough already. Thus, we’ll leave that subject for another time.

I don’t judge anyone who’s eating meat or try to compel anyone into veganism, but I very much enjoy talking about veganism, especially about plant-based diet, and its pros and cons (if there are any).

So, if you have any questions, or you’d like to share your story, I’d love to hear that! 😊

I find it very hard to be a vegan if the rest of the family isn't and don't wish to become one. I would like to be more vegan or even vegetarian..

I can only imagine how hard that would be! Preparing two dishes every day isn't really nice either... Have you at least find some vegan or vegetarian recipes your family enjoys to eat, despite the fact they don't wish to give up on animal products? :)

Sure, we have some favourites like vegetable gratin and such.

Glad to see your story, Jasmin! :)
I was a hardcore vegan for 2 or 3 years and 1 year..almost .. fully raw..
Had good time flying :) Better for sure...
Nowadays life requires from me a different aproach, so I just skip eating creatures nor exploiting or even pet them :) My soul desires so... UnityConscioussness ~
Enjoy your trip! :)

p.s. Magnificent forests you've got there!
...some day you could visit ours too...
peace & light! ;)

Thanks for commenting, @trayan! :)
Loved to hear a little about your vegan journey, it's always really interesting to hear how others have ended up in their current life style! Being fully raw must've had its difficulties, but I'd love to try it too. It's just that I need something warm and hearty to eat, especially during winter!
Have a nice weekend! :)

Hi! The best way to influence the world around is to change yourself) And those who also want to change something can take an example from you :)

P.S.: You can read my story as I became a vegan in my blog)
It was too long for the comment and i did post about it :)

I kept reading this sentence of yours over and over again, it was so well said! Your lovely words made me start this day with a wide smile, thank you for that! :)

I'll go to check out your story asap! :)

Nice to hear this!))

I think that I will still post posts about veganism. Moreover, now I decided to switch to 2 months for raw food. I think I will definitely share this experience;)

That's really interesting, I'm looking forward to reading about your experience! :)

Beautiful post, I love vegan food and would never contribute to the animal industry again, 5 years vegan now. Keep spreading the message :) Peace!

Thank you so much @clausewitz! That's exactly how I feel too, there's no turning back, not even the smallest desire to do so.

You too keep spreading the mesage, you're doing a great job! 😊
