Useless Money

These pictures are amazing, after multiple days without power and water, the people started to sack commerce places destroying the local economy and some business owners even committed suicide after seeing their livelihoods destroyed...

But when the time came and the looters decided to rob a bank, instead of keeping all the money, they just spread it out across the streets, pilled it up and burned it down in a last act of defiance against the government's money printing policy that has caused the collapse of the economy and hyper inflation that might reach 10.000.000% by the end of this year.

These pictures of fiat money spread across the streets and piled up and burning should be a gentle reminder to all countries whose economic policies are to print more money, because this is where it will end up, discarded as useless paper, burning up on the streets and the worse thing is that you can't even use it as toilet paper because it's now dirty.

These lootings are happening in the middle of the biggest blackout in the history of Venezuela, some places are slowly recovering but some others are still going with over 120hrs without any power.

I visited Venezuela as a tourist from the Uk in 2002 and landed right in the middle of the failed coup to overthrow Chavez.
i was struck by the beauty of the country and the friendliness of the people throughout my month long visit.
I am constantly surprised to see the troubles happening in Venezuela because (compared to Britain) it is vast and seems to have a wealth of resources, the fact that people are short of food is staggering to me.
I sincerely hope that the hard times are over soon, we have an old framed map of Venezuela on one of our walls and a flag of the country to remind us of that wonderful trip.
Good luck to you all.

That was a really terrible timing when you came but still back then the country was still prosperous and hadn't collapsed due to socialism and corruption. I wish I could tell you that I remember those years as good times but I was only 6 years old when that coup happened so I don't really remember a lot, I only have memories of watching my country fall apart and become worse every passing year.

This really is amazing, awesome pictures! Sad to see Caracas going Mad Max. I feel for your country, which could be a paradise. Hopefully it will be again, soon.
What I don't get is why power outages regularly lead to riots and loot?
What does electricity have to do with loot? If one shop has a backup generator and the other does not, I don't think that the one with a generator would be spared, right? But if a shop owner has a pumpgun, that might do the trick.

After the 4th day without power and water the looting started probably due to the fact that food is most houses and businesses had started to rot because refrigerators where down, some businesses gave away most of their stock before it perished but others got looted and completely destroyed.

Good luck to the people there and We should hope for their crisis to be over soon and the country to prosper

This is terrible. You only have to sit down and think for a minute before you start to understand the kind of trouble that a power outage this long can cause. One is that sewage goes nowhere if the pumps that keep it going have to power. Sewage treatment plants need power, too. So, what happens in a densely populated urban environment is quite disgusting and very unhealthy if the power is out for much longer than a week.
