The bosses of the criminal gangs that dominate gold impose terror with the same methods of extreme violence used by the leaders of Venezuelan prisons, the pranes, and have turned the mining business into a hawkish network that subjugates and corrupts everyone.

The pran, from which the term pranato is derived, is the maximum and undisputed leader of the brutal warp that operates in Venezuelan prisons. He runs all illegal businesses, including arms and drug trafficking, and has an entourage of criminals at his service. Arbitrarily disposes of the assets and lives of all inmates that he keeps subjugated. Countering their designs can be paid with death. The Pranato in Las Claritas is structured in a similar way as in prisons and imposes its will through fear and coercion. This is operated by Juan Gabriel Rivas Nuñez and Humberto Marte.

Everyone in Las Claritas, including the civil and military authorities, knows who controls the local union. Tuesday is second in command. El Viejo has one of the most important tasks of the town: it controls the alcabala at the entrance to the Las Brisas-Las Cristinas mines. Controlling the alcabala means controlling the extraction of gold in that area.

Since 2008, when the assets of the foreign companies Gold Reserve and Cristallex were seized by the government, the exploitation of the largest gold deposit in Venezuela ended up in the hands of this organized crime group.
