Happy Humpday, Steemians! It's mid-week, and so for most people, that means two days of work left for the week! Yay! Today I met with my shop's social media manager, and as it is now fast approaching Winter here, we decided to do a fireplace theme for our monthly newsletter. We have many fireplace mantles and other fireplace accessories in my shop, but there was one piece that was just so special, with a lot of history. It was this Art Nouveau cast iron stove. I thought I would share it would you all today.

This stove was bought in France at a market. It has a maker's mark noting it's production date in French - ANNEE 1922.
You can see it on the left hand side below, and I have taken a close up for you to see too.

So.. it's called a stove. But where do you cook on it? You may be surprised to find out that the main purpose of this "stove" was to warm the room. The first wood-burning stove originated in Strasbourg somewhere in the mid 1500's, but was used mainly by the rich upper class. The dawn of the Industrial Revolution in the 1700's changed that when iron and steel became cheaper and more accessible.

This particular stove is Art Nouveau, even though it was made in 1922, which is a bit more Art Deco on the timeline. I know it is Art Nouveau because of the beautiful, almost swooping pattern in the decorated areas.

We also had an orange one a while ago, but it went to a beautiful farm house in Namibia. Living in South Africa, items like this are totally foreign to the average South African, and I had never actually seen one of these before I started working at . the antique shop a few years ago.

Nowadays, with central heating these type of stoves are more decorative than functional, but I would love one in my own home one day.

Would you have one in your home? What do you think of these stoves? Let me know in the comments!

Oh what heaven, next to 'garden porn' (looking at beautiful gardens and plants online) I love antique porn (seeing such lovely antique pieces and drooling over their beauty). Thanks for this.

The line and colour of utilitarian objects of the past always give joy as well as serve their purpose. I wish more modern things would do that.

ooh! a girl after my own heart.

How's this, Donna?

Oh, be still my heart!

As I am doing a garden/terrace/pergola project, I'm dying to get some antique french garden chairs, like the type that are the little metal folding ones with wooden slatted seats. If I can't find any antique ones I might have to find a possible repro version. Oh plants and antiques how wondrous you are! :)

Es super viejo y super raro, increรญble! Saludos.

gracias mi amigo!

That is an amazing cast iron stove @princessmewmew. It seems to be in very nice shape as well. It really is a privilege to find such a beautiful antique in such great shape. Good on you. Thanks for sharing.

thanks so much xx

You are right, it is in great shape, and I was very pleased to have it bought for my shop. x

Happy humpday too ,nice

thank you!

The stove looks unique and special because this brand is not common to find and also due to its artistic design it makes it more colorful to have in the house. Based on its usage other more modernized appliances for warming the house makes this stove obsolete to use .

you are right there, but I think nowadays, if you bought one, it would definitely be for the look and feel.

Congratulation princessmewmew! Your post has appeared on the hot page after 10min with 11 votes.

I always find it so cool to see antique pieces like this because it shows ya just how different life was during a different time. I like to think about how people will look back at our โ€œmodernโ€ stuff and think about how archaic it is compared to what they use. Lol

haha ... like the blockchain? Lol. Yes, I love looking back, it is such an insight into past life.

This stove is very beautiful and old @princessmewmew. I like your stove.
What is the price of this stove in market today?

thank you. We have it priced at about $1800

What a lovely piece. It's just glorious.

The house I grew up in had an oil fired stove that size in the kitchen for auxiliary heat. We had a very large oil burner in the living room, and that was it. Heat for the bedrooms upstairs was provided by a system of vents. That's why Grandma's quilts were so highly regarded!

I'd love to have that in my house now. Wood is a little hard to come by here, but I don't have central heat and a decorative maxillary would be most welcome in the winter.

Thanks for showing us a marvelous piece of history...

it can also take anthracite or coal.

these things are completely foreign to us! before we moved to cape town, i never owned a heater, lol.

It is a great historical review and in my country Venezuela we need only air conditioners since the weather is topical and there is no cold like other countries, besides these stoves are like "kitchens" named in my country, very good post and you need little rest hahaha, only two days :(

thank you for your lovely comment!
