100 Articles on Payment Cards Curated Publication and Patent List

in #visa5 years ago

Payment cards are an invention within the last 50 years that have quickly spread across the world to make it part of the daily habit of many people. With many advantages to cash and checks, credit cards, debit cards, and prepaid cards have become commonplace. However, the struggle to get to that point wasn't without a lot of effort, innovation, and failures.

It's important to consider the lessons from the history and techniques of payment cards for new cryptocurrencies. Primarily because there are similar challenges with two sided markets (buyers/consumers and sellers/businesses), but also because the macroscale techniques are so vastly different. One is centralized and federated, another decentralized and formed through byzantine consensus.

In preparing this list of most cited publications (and patents) with "payment card" in the name, you will notice how many of these are patents. It is remarkable how far Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies have come along in the open source movement. Like Linux, expect continual innovation over years and eventually widespread adoption of some form of the technology.
