The Circle of Life

We all can picture what a circle is. To some people it is symbolic while to others it is nothing but a shape. Whatever way you look at it, a circle has no points, it like loop that continues.

And this leads us to the question of what is life?

The dictionary might give us a “well analyzed and probably correct” definition of it but individually we have our understanding of what life is but before I make an attempt to define life, let’s see what the dictionary says about it.

The Merriam-Websterdictionary defines life as “the quality that distinguishes a vital and functional being from a dead body or the sequence of physical and mental experiences that make up the existence of an individual or the period of duration, usefulness, or popularity of something”.

In as much as I want to pick one of these definitions, I find that we all look at it from different perspectives.

Let’s see what the Oxford dictionary has to say about life. It defines it as “The condition that distinguishes animals and plants from inorganic matter, including the capacity for growth, reproduction, functional activity, and continual change preceding death.”

There are several more definitions of life, from the philosophy view to political etc. Yet if we keep on going through them, we might end up confusing ourselves at the end of the day.
Well I will now make an attempt to define life from my own perspective.

Life is the period between what we call birth and death. Life starts at the point we call birth and ends at death. I know some might argue about “life after death” or better rephrased “life after life”, but that is not the basis for our topic today. We are looking at life from the perspective of our existence on earth.

Yes! Life is a circle; it revolves around birth and death. Until we have come to the understanding of that, we would continually fear death.

Look around you and see how everything that has life within it forms that circle. From the fishes in the oceans to the acorn tree in the forest, all things obey that law. Nothing lives forever, the grasses dies, the tell falls or dries up after a long period of time. No matter how long it takes, we all close that circle.

We view birth with joy but death with sorrows, we only want to take but not give back. All through our journey on earth, we have taken and taken from it and yet we want to keep taking without trying to balance the equation.

We don’t want to close the circle; we want to extend it forever. The movie “In Time” explains it better; we want to live forever, turning to genetic modification just so we don’t experience the closing. Yet all other aspects of life on earth closes that circle either naturally or manmade.

The circle balances everything; it keeps everything in perfect harmony. I hope we view life differently after reading this.
