When the second world war began, my mother was three years old. But she remembered not only the sounds of the bombing, but also the taste of food, which was so scarce. In terms of mortality from starvation, Arkhangelsk ranked second after the besieged Leningrad, in both cities the daily bread rate dropped to 125 grams. And this despite the fact that
Arkhangelsk accepted lend-lease goods from its allies.
Saved from the starvation death of children ... the White Sea seal. The meat and fat of this animal, which was mined in the White and Barents Seas, was suggested by scientists to be eaten.
My mother forever remembered the taste of bacon seals and the smell that cannot be called pleasant.
But in those war years everything went as food: from nettle to leather belts ... And the carrot, which my grandmother sometimes brought from the market to her children, was a great delicacy.
In 2010, on the eve of Victory Day, in the city of Military Glory of Arkhangelsk, a monument to a savior seal was erected.
The figure of an animal weighing about 900 kg is cast in bronze. The height of the monument is 1.4 meters. The pedestal is made of white-gray granite on a black base. Light symbolizes the ice floe, dark - the cold of the Arctic waters. It is symbolic that shortly before the freezing drift in the Northern Dvina River, a living seal was seen, which sailed to the place where the monument was erected in its honor.

Когда началась вторая мировая война моей маме было три года. Но она запомнила не только звуки бомбежки, но и вкус пищи, которой было так мало. По смертности от голода Архангельск занимал второе место после блокадного Ленинграда, в обоих городах суточная норма хлеба опускалась до 125 грамм. И это несмотря на то, что
Архангельск принимал грузы по ленд-лизу от союзников.
От голодной смерти детей спас... беломорский тюлень. Мясо и жир этого животного, которого добывали в Белом и Баренцевом морях, ученые предложили употреблять в пищу.
Моя мама навсегда запомнила вкус тюлених шкварок и запах, который приятным не назовешь.
Но в те военные годы в пищу шло все: от крапивы до кожаных ремней... А морковка, которую моя бабушка иногда приносила с рынка своим детям, была большим лакомством.
В 2010 году, накануне Дня Победы, в городе Воинской Славы Архангельске был установлен монумент тюленю-спасителю.
Фигура животного массой около 900 кг отлита из бронзы. Высота памятника 1,4 метра. Постамент - из бело-серого гранита на черном основании. Светлое символизирует льдину, темное – холод арктических вод. Символично, что незадолго до ледохода в реке Северная Двина видели живого тюленя, который приплыл к месту установки памятника в свою честь.
