#Ulog #37 - Wednesday Walk Around Town

We're standing on the bridge over the railroad track on our way to downtown I thought the old stone barrier was interesting, you don't see many like that anymore.

In the next block after crossing the bridge, we see Lincoln Park. With the fountain, gazebo, and benches in the shade, it makes a nice place to stop and take a rest. We have many tourists enjoying this spot because it is right across the street from the Old State Capitol where Abraham Lincoln served as the governor of Illinois.

This is a view of the rear of the Capitol Building as we continue our walk around the block.

In the block directly behind the Old State Capitol is the Fayette County Museum and Artworks Gallery. This land was originally deeded over from the General Assembly in 1823 and funds provided for a "House of Divine Worship, free for all denominations to worship in...." In 1867 the Presbyterians built a church, which is the building that you see here now. In 1970 Historical Vandalia, Inc. purchased the building and in 1979 opened the Fayette County Museum to the public. It wasn't open today for a tour, but in the future, I plan to make a post about the artifacts dating back to the 1800s that this museum showcases.

This is a little gazebo that sits in the garden of the Fayette County Museum providing shade and benches for those enjoying the day.

These hand-laid bricks making the walkway throughout the garden show that the garden is called "Colonel Robert K. McLaughlin Historical Garden. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find any further information on this man, so I have no idea why the garden is dedicated to him.

A lot of history in that area such an interesting walk

Thanks for joining Wednesday Walk :)

Thanks for sponsoring the Wednesday Walk! There is a lot of history in that downtown area. I could do a whole post just about the Capitol Building and what Abe Lincoln did while he was there.

Totally my pleasure to host this challenge and maybe that an idea for a future post I do love hearing or reading about the history of places

Walking is fun. My mind always works better when I move.

I feel the same way, it's a great way to cut through some of the clutter, plus get some fresh air and exercise.

This is a coincidence, as I made an account at Narrative months ago when they weren't doing anything but making up groups that people were bidding on. I just logged in though, so perhaps I will enter your contests. I've really just started writing fiction, but I really like it. I haven't tried yet with a word limit, so it might be interesting to see what I could come up with. I wouldn't have known they were open for business if I hadn't read your post. :)

Well, I'm glad I got you to remember about Narrative! I'd love for you to enter my contest there. The word limit is a good thing for me. I usually go over it the first time and then go back and trim some of the dead weight out, I think it improves my writing.

Great Wednesdaywalk photos! I particularly love the gazebo with all its Shadows!

Thanks @melinda010100. It was very peaceful sitting in there. There were even some wild grapes vining around in there. Too bad they weren't ripe yet.
