After dinner most nights we would take a walk around the Matterhorn
valley in the Italian Alps and explore some of the old abandoned
houses in the area.Mostly made from stone and even the roofs
were thick shingles of...
1 1/2" stone that would last many lifetimes.
You could imagine the hard work involved and wonder how they
survived the long Winters.
At that altitude we were told it started to snow in early Oct and
it lasted till May.

Wow amazing. I love looking at those ruined houses and wondering what it was like to live there.

wow, amazing sir karbon! I suppose houses like that are hundreds of years old? I can't imagine winters that long..those were hardy souls!
They must be at least a hundred and probably much more... stone is a poor insulator so maybe they only lived there in the Summer to graze their animals and moved to lower altitude for the Winter...hardy non the less..
