Wednesday Walk {More Shots from Amicalola Falls}

Since I had plenty more shots from our trip to the mountains this past weekend, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to join in on @tattoodjay's #wednesdaywalk! I often spend more of my dedicated exercise time running than walking, but this weekend was flipped as @dksart and I enjoyed our days exploring some parts of Georgia that I haven't had the pleasure of seeing before. I teased some pics in my @actifit post on Saturday, but why don't we take a little more time to enjoy the views today...

Amicalola Falls is a state park housing not only the stunning waterfall, but a host of other activities including trails, lodging, zip lines, archery, and plenty of other outdoor adventures. You can hike through 8.5 miles of trails to get to the Southern tip of the Appalachian Trail. I would love to go back and explore some more of the trails, but this time it was all about climbing the stairs to get to the main attraction. We parked just beyond the visitor center at the reflection pool.

It was fairly busy for a Friday afternoon, but I can only imagine how packed it must be on a nice weekend day! We had no trouble finding parking. The entrance to the short trail up to the first set of stairs is just on the other side of the pool.

There were plenty of nice bits of scenery as we started the trek up the trail.

@dksart kept his camera handy for some of his own shots. All of my photos were taken with my phone (Motorola Z Droid). The trail was not too strenuous at all and well kept. I have a highly irrational fear of snakes and poison ivy, so I was happy that this adventure kept me well away from both.

After a short trip we made it to the base of the first set of stairs. This was where you could really start to see the view of what was to come above!

When traveling with just the two of us he humors me with a few selfies. At least I have long enough arms to not require a stick. 😉

Here we go...

IMG_20181005_143756525_HDR.jpg

Though the climb is fairly strenuous (as advertised), there are plenty of points to stop and catch your breath along the way. Or just to stop and take in the view from all angles.

IMG_20181005_143934800_HDR.jpg

It is quite beautiful when you get to the viewing ledge in front of the waterfall. I shared one shot the other day, but why not give you an even better idea what it is like to stand in front of such a powerful piece of nature. However, the climb has only just begun as there is another set of even more steps to make it to another vantage point at the top of the falls!

IMG_20181005_145117465_HDR.jpg

We were both sweating as we made it up the winding 425 steps on this portion of the climb. I think the view once again speaks for itself, though. Wow, what a stunning world we live in! How have I missed this gem in my home state for so long?

IMG_20181005_145126426_HDR.jpg

After taking some time to enjoy the summit, we made our way back down the steps. A much easier trip, but as @dksart wanted to stop every so often to take some video I had plenty of time to leisurely reflect on the experience.

A truly magical day all around! The only thing better was that we went to an equally stunning spot the next day. Don't worry, I'll make sure to share that soon, too...

Enjoy your walks my friends!

Gorgeous photos @plantstoplanks!! The "falls" are beautiful!! ❤

Thanks @deerjay! We definitely captured some wonderful memories from the day! :)

You're very welcome!

Absolutely breathtaking Katie. Although I am not sure if I would be able to get up those stairs................I would have to take loooong breaks, lol. I also love your selfies; you are such a nice couple and the last slefie of you is almost mystical 😊

We took a few quite lengthy photo breaks, as well. Even as much as I stay active those stairs were a challenge! I'll try to get the other hiking post up soon. It was another magical day in the woods! :)

I can totally imagine and I better go check if it is up yet!

Not yet, but I'll get there! At least Dave has been sharing some pics here and there, too. :)

I shared Dave's too yesterday and no rush Katie, take your time 😊

Absolutely magnificent! I love nature days spent like this. Lots of hiking, birds singing, waterfalling… it all sounds perfect. I’m glad you got to explore your state and take in all that it has to offer. Looks like a fantastic weekend to me @plantstoplanks.

Makes me realize how much more often we need to do weekends like this. So much of this is even close enough for a day trip, but it is nice to tack on a few nights away from home. ;) I've definitely got a few more spots on my list to hit soon! You better post all of your adventures when you take off so I can enjoy yours virtually, too, haha!

Haha… we will. Especially once we settle a bit :) I find I feel so much more happy, like internally happy, when I’m outside. We could just be peddling around town, playing at the beach or whatever, but I’m much happier doing that stuff than sitting in doors. Day trips can be a blast too!

It's so crazy to me, too, because I feel exactly the same way but yet still go too long in between nature therapy sometimes! I am actually pretty pumped to have cooler weather coming because I tend to spend more time outside when it feels more comfortable to really get moving. :)

Oh yeah I bet. How humid is it during summer months for you? Ive heard it gets pretty bad…every time we go inland it seems to be during colder months 🤷🏼‍♀️

P.s. it’s funny you say you have an irrational phobia of poison oak and snakes… my husband is the same way with those slithery little suckers. I, on the other hand, constantly think I stepped in poison oak, that I have a rash developing or there is a massive spider on my back when we trek it out in the wilderness. Needless to say Costa Rica is going to be fun for both of us. Haha

It gets pretty humid here. Maybe not as bad as some places, but there are mornings when I try to go run and I feel like I need gills because it's 96% humidity levels.

Snakes have always given me the willies. I think some of it stems from my older sister torturing me with worms or anything worm-like as a kid. Now I can't stand anything with no legs, haha! And I had a couple of really awful cases of poison ivy when I was younger. One summer when I was 15 my entire torso was covered in a terrible rash. I honestly thought my skin would be scarred after that bout. All from holding a snuggly puppy that had been out in the woods while wearing a bikini...

I'm sure you will definitely have some interesting experiences there!

Oh no… the puppy tricked you into a bout of poison oak… that’s the meanest thing I’ve ever heard. 😟 sounds like an awful experience. I hope that didn’t turn you into a cat person 🙄. Haha

Would you believe that a couple weeks a year @dandays and I will complain about the awful “humidity” in Southern California? It’s pretty laughable by comparison. I still get my runs in the earlier the better. As the day progresses the wind kicks up and everyone hates running against the wind. Yes I sing that song ‘Against The Wind’ by Bob Seger every time I find myself in that unfortunate position. Haha

I think all of my irrational fear just came from being a hypochondriac 🤷🏼‍♀️

Hi @plantstoplanks, I am from South Georgia (USA) and currently live in Atlanta. I've always wanted to go see Amicalola, and Tallulah
falls as well. I used to love hiking, and will get back to it once I get
My new hip, sometime in the next few months.
I hope

Hey there fellow Georgian! :)

I've lived here for 25 years and only just now made it to Amicalola, and Tallulah is also high on my list! Isn't funny that you can be so close to things and never find the time to go enjoy them? I'll share our other hiking experience soon, which was my first time on the Appalachian Trail. Lots of first this past weekend.

I hope you get your hip back to good function so you can get back out and enjoy hiking again! It really is a great way to enjoy nature. Thanks for popping in to comment!

Indeed it looks like it was a magical day the views and WOW thos ewaterfalls are so beautiful

Thanks for joining Wednesday Walk tip!

Thanks @tattoodjay! It's a little crazy to still have such warm weather in October, but I'm glad we took advantage because I think colder weather is fast approaching now. Although those cooler days can be just as fun to explore in, as well. ;)

YEah Mother Nature has bene keeping us on our toes this year with temps all over the place, I have a feeling the cold will soon be upon us as well

Amicalola Falls looks beautiful, thank you for taking us along with you! Looks like you had a very energised hike up to the top, and what amazing views to be rewarded with for all that "strenuous" effort ;)

I look forward to reading about the next spot you spoke of!

It really is a lovely place to visit! Always fun to get in a workout while you are enjoying such scenery, too. Though it is nice that they have parking lots not far from both the top of the falls and the viewpoint right in front so people with limited mobility can still enjoy without having to try to attempt the stairs. Glad to be able to share part of my home state with you!

Aww shucks, thanks @actifit crew!!

Pretty neat what you can find at the top of a stairwell, right? ;) While we were climbing we discussed how challenging it must have been to be the workers actually putting in all those steps. I hope they were able to take a break every now and then to enjoy the scenery, as well!

I bet they had a wonderful time building these :)
