Wednesday Walk around Grand Central

Wednesday Walk - Walking around Grand Central terminal

This is a post for the Wednesday Walk Challenge that I started recently, for those that missed previous post the guidelines for the challenge are....

Wednesday walk challenge

Try and get out once a week for a short walk, can be from your office, home or anywhere really and walk for a few blocks or a few minutes looking for things to get shots of.

Try and get a few shots not just one

You can look for anything in generally or decide on one subject you want to get shots of.

Try to limit yourself to a set distance or time from the starting location, say 5 Blocks, 5 Minutes walk or whatever and see what you can find in that short distance

Make a point of looking around and up and see what you can find to get shots of that otherwise you may miss

Do a post with the shots you get on a Wednesday and tag it with #wednesdaywalk, also if you happen to join it this week please leave a link to your post in a comment on this post and I will try and visit them all.

I am not strict on these rules and hence why they are called guidelines and not rules

Today's post I will share some of the cool detail along the 42nd Street Side of Grand Central terminal in NYC

Starting of with the Statue and clock over one of the entrances to the station, which is quite ornate and cool and probably noticed by most who have been through Grand Central

This Statue up above 42nd Street actually on Park Avenue which is elevated as it passes over 42nd Street has this Statue which may well be missed by many, the Statue is of Cornelius Vanderbilt, who was an uneducated Farm Boy and when he died was probably the wealthiest man in America at the time of his death.

He started making his money initially ferrying passengers on sailboats and then ferry boats, but as Railroads started spreading he switched his money and empire to railroads and by 1860 he had a controlling interesting the only two rail networks which came into Manhattan, which no doubts explains why his statue is in this location.

This is an Eagle Statue overlooking Lexington Ave and 42nd Street, it is one of the original, is one of the many Eagles that used to be atop the original Grand Central terminal, which was demolished in 1902 prior to the building of the new Grand Central Terminal, when the building was demolished many of the eagles were sold to private owners, however tow found there way back to the Current Grand Central,

To give you a sense of their size the wingspan is 13 feet and it weighs over 4,000 pounds.

And this ends this little tour of some of the detail outside Grand Central terminal.

I remember how beautiful that building was, particularly he ceiling inside. I should have paid more attention to the exterior but it was already nighttime when we got there. Thanks for filling the gap for me. Great shots, Jay:)

Awesome pictures of Grand Central terminal @tattoodjay. It looks like that the eagle is keeping an eye on everyone. Also very surpised to know about its wing span and weight. Thanks for sharing such an amazing post.

Thanks for your visit and support, I had seen that eagle many times but only when preparing this post did I realize how huge it is

You are absolutely right @tattoodjay. The eagle is really huge.

Even hunger than I imagined to be honest seeing it from a distance you do not really grasp how huge it is
