Uganda introduced a social media tax on June one, 2018. The extremely disputed tax needs voters exploitation social media sites and apps like Whatsapp, Facebook, and Twitter to pay two hundred shillings ($0.05) per day of usage. voters aren't needed to pay the tax on days that they are doing not use the apps or sites.

Yoweri Museveni, the president of African country, explicit that the tax was necessary to counter the threat of gossipmongering on social media. once he 1st promoted the tax months earlier, he explicit that the money recovered from the tax would enable the state to “cope with the implications of gossipmongering.”[1]

The tax isn't in style in African country, wherever voters have suspect the govt of invasive on their freedom of expression. The introduction of the social media tax isn't the primary time that Museveni has clamped down on social media. In 2016, he suspended access to all or any social media sites throughout elections because of claims that individuals used them to unfold lies.
