How to handle Chinese dictionaries | Cómo manejar los diccionarios chinos
Chinese dictionaries are really interesting since Chinese script is not based on the sound of each character but in the number, shape, and order of the strokes for each character.
Digital dictionaries are the best option if you just want to quickly find the meaning of a character. My favorite site is mdbg.net, when you land on the site you will get something like this:
Los diccionarios chinos son muy interesantes debido a que el sistema de escritura chino no está basado en sonidos sino en el npumero, forma y orden de los trazos de los caracteres.
Los diccionarios digitales son la mejor opción si lo que deseas en encontrar rápido el significado de un caracter. Mi favorito es mdbg.net, al llegar a su sitio web te encuentras esto:

On the textbox you can input the PinYin for your word or an English word o find the Chinese equivalent. If you are searching for the meaning of a Chinese character and don't know the PinYin, you should click on the brush and you will get a box where you can draw the character. Of course, you could just copy and paste the character on the textbox.
Here is where things get tricky, in order for you to find the character you have to draw the best that you can the shape of the character, but also you have to write the character with the correct other of strokes. If you got the shape correct but the order is not, you won't get the character. Below is an example of my mouse drawing of the character from the writing practice # 1.
En el cuadro de texto puedes ingresar el PinYin del caracter o la palabra en Inglés para buscar su equivalente en Chino. En caso de que estés buscando el significado de un caracter y no conozcas su PinYin, debes dar click sobre el pincel para dibujar el caracter en un cuadro. Por supuesto, podrías simplemente copiar y pegar el caracter en el cuadro de texto.
Aquí se complica un poco, para hallar el caracter hay que dibujar lo mejor posible su forma y también hay que dibujar correctamente el orden de los trazos. Si dibujas correctamente la forma, pero el orden de los trazos no es el correcto, no obtendrás el significado. A continuación hay un ejemplo de mi dibujo con el mouse del caracter de la práctica de escritura # 1.

What I like the most about mdbg.net is the completeness of the information provided by them. They have the stroke order of the character, its pronunciation, advanced search to find words that contain the character you just draw, and many more.
Lo que más me agrada de mdbg.net es que la información que proveen es muy completa. Puedes encontrar el orden de los trazos del caracter, su pronunciación, puedes hacer búsquedas avanzadas para encontra palabras que contengan el caracter que dibujaste y muchas más.
Stroke order rule | Regla para el orden de los trazos
Once you have some practice, you will be able to guess over 90% of the time the correct order of the stroke on any character. In the beginning, you will have to remember only a handful of them and practice enough to write the character almost intuitively.
The basic rules are:
- First, write the upper side, then write the lower side
- First, the write the left side, then write the right side
- Horizontal strokes first, then vertical strokes
- Enclosure before filler
- First, the filler strokes then closing the enclosure
- Strokes that cross many others are written last
- Symmetrical characters' middle strokes should be written first
This rules have exceptions, they should be seen as guiding lines. More detailed rules can be found here.
Lo que más me agrada de mdbg.net es que la información que proveen es muy completa. Puedes encontrar el orden de los trazos del caracter, su pronunciación, puedes hacer búsquedas avanzadas para encontra palabras que contengan el caracter que dibujaste y muchas más.
Las reglas básicas son:
- Primero la parte superior luego la inferior
- Primero la parte izquierda luego la derecha
- Primero los trazos horizontales luego los verticales
- Primero la cobertura que el relleno
- Primero los trazos de relleno luego cerrar la cobertura
- Trazos que corten a otros trazos se escriben de último
- Los trazos centrales de los caracteres simétricos se escriben primero.
Estas reglas tienen excepciones, deben ser vistas solo como guías. Aquí se encuentran reglas más detalladas.

I use two types of indexes for printed dictionaries in order to find the meaning of the characters, those indexes tend to be in the beginning or in the middle of the dictionary. On the first index, you should identify the main radical of the character and then count the extra strokes that the character has.
Para los diccionarios impresos yo utilizo dos tipos de índices para buscar los caracteres, estos índicies suelen aparecer en las primeras hojas del diccinario on en la mitad. En el primero de estos índices se debe indentificar el radical principal del caracter y luego contar cuantos trazos adicionales hay.

If I can't recognize the character's radical, then I went on an index that has the characters ordered by the number of the strokes it has. Thus I have to count how many strokes the character has and search it on the index. Finally, all the characters are ordered alphabetically by its PinYin, so if I know what the PinYin of a character is I just search it as I was searching in an English dictionary.
As a parting gift, there is a link to a pdf document with all the 214 simplified radicals. Also below is a video with all the radicals as well.
Si noreconozco el radical del caracter, estonces voy al índice en el que los caracteres están ordenados por el número de trazos que contienen. Por tanto, cuento los trazos del caracter y lo busco en el índice. Finalmente, los caracteres están ordenados según el PinYin, así que si conozco el PinYin de un caracter, lo busco como en un diccionario de Español.

interesante idioma y muy bonitos caracteres, siempre me llaman la atencion todo su alfabeto es algo magico.
Los caracteres chinos tinen una conexión muy profunda con las artes de esa nación, no solo con la literatura sino con las artes plásticas... a mi lo que más me impresiona es que es un sistema que se ha mantenido casi sin modificaciones durante casi ¡2000 años!
