An Apple A Day - Keeps The Doctor Away

Have you ever heard the saying, "An Apple A Day, Keeps The Doctor Away" ?

I remember hearing this being told to me as a child in school, my parents, uncles, aunties and any older person who feels compelled to give a young child advise - which is basically everyone older than you. But I digress, back to the age old proverb - I wondered where in the world did this saying come from.

Upon some investigation, I discovered that it is an old English proverb whose meaning is simply that eating nutritious food will make you healthier, and thus you should not need to go to the doctor because you won't fall ill as often.

Ok...

...Now what?

So is it really true? I mean, wasn't it just a ploy for these older people who govern our lives (speaking from a child's perspective...) to get us to eat our fruits and vegetables? I am sure it is all just a scam!

But in an article by Medical News Today, it stated that "...apples are extremely rich in important antioxidants, flavonoids, and dietary fiber. The phytonutrients and antioxidants in apples may help reduce the risk of developing cancer, hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease..." It then goes on to talk about the nutritional profile of apples and various benefits to our health.

Some of those key pointers are:

  • Improving neurological health
  • Preventing dementia
  • Reducing your risk of stroke
  • Lowering levels of bad cholesterol
  • Reducing your risk of diabetes
  • Warding off breast cancer
  • Obesity

Now that is a short but extensive list of not just health problems but it now seems like "An Apple A Day, Keeps Me Alive".

So what is the catch? So simple is the elixir of long life?

A further look into the fruit shows that you need to eat the whole apple INCLUDING the peel - it is the skin or peel of the apple that holds all the nutrients and vitamins to fight and combat the poisons in our bodies to keep us healthy and strong. .

So yeah - there is some truth to this proverb and I still believe it is a conspiracy to get kids to eat fruits. But I hope you have enjoyed this little article and remember to have an apple if you can.

Cheers!!
