Term: Sul g
Definition: A directive to string musicians
to perform the indicated passage on the G string. Literally sul means "on the", and "G" refers to the "G" string.
Different strings of a stringed instrument, such as a violin, have different tone qualities. This is due to their different physical characteristics, such as their diameter, and their different resonances on the instrument. A string musician can obtain different timbres and qualities of sound by playing the same note on different strings. An advanced player might deliberately choose to play in a higher position of a low string (or lower position of a high string) for this effect. The composer can take advantage of this, directing which string should be played for a particular passage. For example, a composer or arranger can direct a part be played on the G string when otherwise it might be played on the D with "sul G".
