Up the workers!

Where I walk the dog of a morning we pass a fair few factory's, our journey 'round the block' generally takes a while as most of the workers from various businesses like to greet Charlie and have a quick chat with me. One particular company has been riding the roller coaster of business lately and just before Christmas things were that bad it looked like they might go under. To that end they laid off a few workers and those that remained struggled to find things to keep themselves busy. Clearly the owners of the company are made of sterner stuff and have slowly have managed to pick up a few orders here and there from new customers one of which has decided to negotiate to buy into the supplier. Good news you would think? Well it is, but the guy I speak to every morning epitomises what's wrong with British industry:

Worker: "I've got a meeting with the gaffer this morning."
Me: "Nothing bad I hope?"
Worker: "Na, it's about that customer who's buying part of the business."
Me: "Oh?"
Worker: "Yeah, he's gonna tell me what's happening. I'm gonna tell him I want more money! If they're bringing in more money then I should have a pay rise!"
Me: "You should be careful, company's that take over other company's generally get rid f staff."
Worker: "Na, they'll never get rid of me.

So let me get this straight: You nearly lost your job before Christmas, you were dead worried and didn't know what you were going to do? A company has come along and saved you and your co-workers from drowning and the first thought in your mind is not "Phew! My jobs safe for a bit." it's "GIVE ME MORE MONEY!"
