Work and Holiday Australia

in #work6 years ago

Palm trees in the winter, Kangaroos and Koalas, real natives in the real outback. All this and much more is offered by beautiful Australia. Why did we travel to Australia? Probably for the same reasons and because it is probably nowhere so easy to travel and work together. At least that's what we thought before we arrived here. We landed in Brisbane. There we had pleasant spring temperatures of 25 degrees Celsius and in the middle of the Australian winter. The city is really nice. Neither too big nor too small. And there are free water dispensers, a city beach and BBQ areas for free. Yes! We want to stay here for the time being. After we quickly realized that we should not stay here for weeks without a job, because the money is dwindling pretty quickly, we could at some point still motivate to write CVs and were then very proud. However, it took another couple of days before we made it to the printer. But finally we did that too and we finally started the job search.

In principle, we had no precise idea of what job we want to do. So we were completely motivated with our CVs from a restaurant on the next café for the next snack and we were happy, that every third person has accepted our note. After days later no one had responded to our application, we realized that it would probably not be so easy. Unfortunately, many bar and restaurant owners are also aware that the Work & Holiday visa does not allow them to work for more than six months with the same employer. Of course, many prefer employment for a longer period of time, the CV is often not even accepted. In addition, someone told us that the season is currently not the best and only from Christmas staff is looking for. Christmas? Until then, we are definitely broke. So what should we do?

By now we did not care what kind of job it would become. After we asked for jobs in our hostel, but there were not really available, we came up with the idea to address people who are obviously just looking for a job. So we asked the rickshaw drivers and flyerboys with the result that we distributed leaflets a day later for $ 18 an hour. Admittedly, this job is neither particularly lucrative nor exciting, but hey, it's a job and a start! In addition, I currently distribute rather a few flyers until a better job has been found instead of pursuing up to pension daily the same boring full-time job.

What options are there to actually find a job in Australia?

Option 1: Distribute CVs
It is best not to go to the low season or the new semester start. For at this time it is almost impossible to get waiter or bartender jobs. Otherwise, this method should be very promising. With 15 distributed CVs a day, the likelihood of finding a job is very high.

Option 2: Working Hostels
There are so-called working hostels that specialize in providing jobs to backpackers. Mostly farm jobs, construction jobs or fundraising jobs. Here you can find suitable working hostels.

Option 3: Gumtree.com
The Ebay of Australia. On this website you will find everything you need or do not need, from jobs to apartments and cars.

Option 4: Talk to people
To address people who already have a job is always a good option. Because in many cases they pass on the number from their boss and you can personally ask him if there is currently a vacancy. In principle, Australians are more likely to respond to direct calls than to email requests anyway.DSC00615.jpg
