Devon Island: Mars on Earth

in #world6 years ago

Devon Island in the Bay of Baffin, which is part of the Arctic Ocean in the Canadian region and is the largest on the uninhabited land for several very good reasons. The island is frozen most days of the year and the thickness of the ice there is between 500 to 700 meters during the summer months, which only 45 to 50 days a year. The temperature of the island in the summer at its maximum of 8 degrees Celsius, while the temperature in the middle of the length of -16 degrees Celsius and as a result of all these harsh conditions are completely free of animals and plants and the scientists found a wonderful use of this island as it is a desert arid ice-like extent The greatest conditions that humans may encounter on Mars

Since 2001, a group of scientists have spent a summer vacation on Devon Island within a national research project called the Hutton Mars Project that studies the possibility of living and working in this region as if on Mars

The island of Devon is harsh terrain with temperatures under the freezing limit and completely isolated from what NASA scientists can use for some useful research topics and it gives NASA some supply challenges that are somewhat similar to the obstacles they encounter with Mars with a certain proportion

The project is funded by NASA and has been built on a hill overlooking a large hole with a diameter of 23 kilometers, which was formed about 39 million years ago when a meteorite fell on the earth in this region and water has been freezed because of the temperature is very low and contains a lot of Geological characteristics which are very similar to Mars

One of the more secure factors for NASA's mission on Mars is its extensive testing of nearby equipment that does not cost much to ensure the success of the mission in the real task. NASA has created this base despite its cost

There are many places where NASA was considering setting up this base, but the advantage of this site is that it contains many highlands and valleys that are very similar to sites on Mars

and here are some photos of the island

It certainly looks bleak and not very inviting, but I can totally see how it would be a good place to do research for things like conditions on other planets...

yes indeed I agree with you
