Pistoleros - Did You Wake Up All Alone [music review]

in #writing6 years ago

Pistoleros, named from a Marlon Brando movie line, may be the last of the Tempe, Arizona groups from an era when rock bands still graced the airwaves. Their history is long, torrid and intertwined with the Gin Blossoms et al. Project of brothers Zubia, Pistoleros’ new album is due Nov 3rd and it’s appropriately titled, Silver to mark the band’s 25th anniversary.

The single will take you by surprise if you’re a regular to the Tempe genre. Did You Wake Up All Alone, with its “morphine-drip” guitar tremolo, haunting and hollow verses and gravelly lead vocal, set the tone for a soundtrack-esque four minutes and twenty seconds.

The single has all the textures you’d probably find if you suddenly did wake up all alone. Guitar tones are skillfully chosen and jarring, synth lines are thin and ethereal, drums expertly navigate the listener throughout the journey and all its emotional lane changes.

Did You Wake Up All Alone arrives at its destination, 2 guitars in hand, for its poignant, deep space jam that will make even Pink Floyd fans tremble.
