How to Sort Truth From Bullshit.

in #writing6 years ago (edited)

A political meme goes around on Facebook. It's probably designed to make Trump look either good or bad, depending on who's shopping it out.

Automatically assume it is slanted and wrong. Especially if it deals in absolutes, or it lists a bunch of random dates without anything to back it up.

Here's the current one.

I've seen this thing at least a dozen times on my Facebook timeline. I am not a Trump fan. Surprise! So usually I let these roll past and ignore them. I don't need more reasons to dislike the guy.

But by the time I'd seen it two dozen or so times, I decided to do a little fact checking. And as happens all too often, the meme is bullshit.

In 2016 North Korea offered peace talks. Obama stood up and said the offer wasn't good enough and talks fizzled out. Does that sound like a "Pledge" to you?

In 2012 North Korea agreed to SUSPEND Uranium enrichment, and allowed inspectors on site. No "pledge" to be found.

In 2011 there was a whole lot of talking throughout the year. NK CONSIDERED stopping if talks continued. Then their leader died and Kim Jung Un took over. scratches head Where's that pledge again?

In 2010 NK offered to exchange a cease fire with South Korea for Peace Talks. Seoul responded with threats. That fell apart quickly. Later in the year they expressed a willingness to disarm to the point of being on "equal footing" with other nuclear countries.

I am not going to continue breaking this down but I hope you get my point.

There is a very thorough article HERE that breaks it down not only by year, but by month.

Please remember that in 2004, Fox News won a suit that allows them to lie to you. They do not have to report facts. They can tell you whatever they want. Not just Fox, ALL media.

Stay smart. If something seems fishy, don't fall for it without a bit of thinking and research.

Have a great day, love to you!

Indeed, ALL media lie. However, the problem is that most people are too conditioned to see it. I'm here (and other places) to wake people up, but it can be very frustrating when you get that blank stare time and time again. Anyway, thank you for this, I hope it shows some people to think for themselves and not just believe everything they're shown by media.

Thank you for this. I think Trump is scum, but I hate the baseless and shallow attacks. Like, he's scum because he a lying misogynist who lets fascists run the country and stiffs people who work for him, etc. I DON'T CARE if he is graceless, looks funny, or had an affair. If he was a good guy we wouldn't care about any of that (didn't JFK have affairs??). Just like it was Hillary's business if Bill got a blow job and shouldn't have blown up like it did because THAT'S BETWEEN THEM. I care about kids and their parents being separated and immigrants and refugees being treated like criminals; I care about a BOMB BEING DROPPED EVERY TWELVE MINUTES, I care about environmental and civil rights protections being stripped away, I care about corrupt elections. To focus on mocking him for some fool tweet distracts from the VERY REAL PROBLEMS. Argh.

I always enjoy your blogs because your gift to write is pure joy to read 💖🌸💖 wishing you a peaceful, joyful day! With lots of love, Jill.

Even when I cuss like a sailor? Lmao!

💜 Thank you!!

You know it is a lie when they start out with "Fun TRUE fact". Is there such a thing as a false fact? I always dislike this type of propaganda no mater who they are targeting. Thanks for the enlightenment.

Totally agree!! People will twist words up so “cleverly” that it will make you believe lies. You always have to do your own research. Great post!

According to Wikipedia, North Korea signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in 1985 - so that year seems correct, if nothing else.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_the_North_Korean_nuclear_program

Timeline of the North Korean nuclear program
This chronology of the North Korean nuclear program has its roots in the 1950s and begins in earnest in 1989 with the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union, the main economic ally of North Korea. The Chronology mainly addresses the conflict between the United States and North Korea, while including the influences of the other members of the six-party talks: China, Russia, South Korea, and Japan.
The North Korean nuclear program can roughly be divided into four phases. Phase I (1956–80) dealt primarily with training and gaining basic knowledge.

Yes, there was also an agreement struck in 1992 between both North and South to take Nukes out of both countries.

The number of dates that make no sense however is ridiculous and makes me wonder what they were trying with this one if not only to attempt to discredit Trump.
