A story of determination and hardwork

Do you depend your life on what someone says? Or do you let others decide your life? Let me tell you about the story on how determination and hardwork changes your life.

I heard it from my brother's homily.

There was once 2 happy-go-lucky friends, Juan and Pedro who loves to sit around all day doing nothing. One day, tired of doing nothing everyday but wait for the sun to set, they decided to try to know what fate has in store for them. So, they went to a local soothsayer to tell them their destiny.
On their way, they discussed who will face the soothsayer first and Pedro presented to go first. Moments later, Pedro went out with face lit with joy for the soothsayer told him that he will become very successful in life and become rich. After hearing this, Juan hurriedly went inside expecting the soothsayer will also tell him the same. But, he lost his excitement after hearing that he is destined to be poor. After gathering himself up, Juan, with downcast eyes, went out. Juan was so down hearted that he did not talk to Pedro and walked past him immediately. Pedro realized everything is not OK so he asked what happened. Juan told Pedro about what the soothsayer told him. Pedro consoled Juan and told him that he will take him as his aide but Juan left him.
It was still midday upon returning home from the soothsayer. Pedro, being destined to be rich, went back to his old ways, waiting for the sun to set doing nothing. On the other hand, destined to be poor, went home, picked up his mattock and bolo and set out to the fields and planted a banana.
Six months later, Pedro is still doing nothing while Juan is about to harvest his banana and sell it on the market. To reach the market Juan needs to transverse the place where him and Pedro usually sit waiting for the day to end doing nothing. Upon seeing Juan carrying his harvest, Pedro asked him where he stole those bananas. Juan humbly replies that he planted it 6 months ago, because he needs to work hard since he is destined to be poor. Pedro laughs and told him not to worry because once he becomes rich, he will take Juan as his aide.
Another six months passed and now Juan has 2 bunch of bananas. Same as usual, the two met and Pedro asked Juan where did he stole the bananas. Juan again replies that he planted it because he needs to since he is destined to be poor.
Blessed bountifully by God, Juan planted not just bananas but many more. 2 years passed and Juan was able to buy a truck to carry his harvest to the market. Upon seeing this, Pedro told Juan that Juan's boss should be very kind for letting him drive it. Juan humbly responded that the truck is his', thanking God for the overflowing blessings.
10 years passed, Juan's crops continued to yield very good harvest and he was able to buy a top of the line SUV. Upon seeing this, Pedro told Juan that his boss should be very rich. Again, Juan humbly responded that he owns the car, the fruit of his labor. Furious, Pedro stormed the soothsayer saying that what she prophecized to them are false. The soothsayer responded calmly that what he told them are just guides.
How many of us are like Pedro, lazy and no direction in life? Who loves to sit all day, waiting for the day to end? Who lets others decide for him? Do you think you will be successful? Can you achieve your goals in life if you procrastinate?
How many of us are like Juan, determined to achieve his goals in life? Who does not believe on what others say and decides for himself? Who succeeds when everyone thinks he is destined to fail?
Life is too short to depend on someone. You are given one life for you to decide. Don't let someone define your future. Act. If you want to achieve something, do whatever it takes to achieve it. The important thing is you are happy whether you succeed or not because it was you who decides for it and not someone else.
