Six Hundred Words With My Muse. [Literary Genius Inside][Brace Yourself]

in #writing6 years ago

So, I’ve set myself a timer. This is a good thing. I’m trying to get out as many ideas as possible and explain this whole thing to you at the same time. It’s very meta writing. I know.

I’m currently in the middle of getting my fingers back onto the keyboard to churn out more of The Coroner. I’m having as much fun writing this gore and suspense as I had writing Adventures. For all the loyal followers of that special saga, you’ll be happy to know that it isn’t going anywhere. Sometimes you just need a bit of a break to freshen the mind, so to speak.

The muse.

I took a writing class a couple of years ago. Or was it last year? Anyway, one thing that I really took away from the whole experience was that writers need to write. If you are not creative, but want to be, it’s the same process as someone who has a million ideas that’s happy to get them all down at any time of the day. You’ve actually got to sit on the chair, keyboard (or smartphone) in front of you, and type. The whole idea of a muse, or how it was explained to me was that you’ve got a little angel sitting on your shoulder whispering ideas into your head. You can’t get any of the ideas down if you’re not typing. The kicker is, he (or she) only whispers while you type. So you’ve got to make multitasking a thing for you whether you like it or not. So here I am, just wanting to get that out into the world.

It was worth writing, right?

Sure it was! To me! Again, I return to the reasoning why I write, which may be different to the reason why you do. Hopefully, it is the same reason, though. I write because I love it. Yes, I’ll admit that some of the toughest times are when nothing is coming out. It doesn’t usually happen if I’m writing a comic review or something travel related as I have a bit of a pattern I follow. The comic has a story that I can explain and share my feelings and a restaurant either has good or bad food that again, is cheap or expensive that I can share with you. It’s all about how I feel.

Writing creatively is more about letting the whispers happen. You need to open your ears and listen.

So far, I have spent less than about two seconds not tapping at the keyboard, so that’s the reason that things may not be quite as coherent as I want them to be. I’ll be spending about five minutes on top of the fifteen I’m spending on this post to give it a brief edit. When I say edit, I’m just going to tidy up the spelling mistakes and punctuation. Not the content. After all, this is about listening to my muse and allowing the content and ideas to flow.

Creativity.

I briefly touched on it before, but it is certainly worth elaborating in the final three minutes of my allocated time to chat in this session. I want to continue writing Adventures. To be honest, I want to turn it into a hundred issues if I can. As for The Coroner, it’s progressing well. Ideally, I’d like it to wrap up in twenty issues, but I find it hard to tie things up in a bow. I want you guys to keep coming back for more quality work. I pride myself on the quality of work going out there into the universe.. um webiverse? Except maybe for the quality of this content!

Of course, this post has a very specific purpose. It’s my way of saying, sit down. Type. Type and listen to your muse. They’re trying to tell you something and you’ve got to get it down. It’ll make you a better writer and you’ll feel like you’ve achieved so much.

Well, that’s it. Times up! See you next time.

Afterword.

What you see above took me exactly fourteen minutes and fifty eight seconds to produce. Is it completely coherent? Ha. Wouldn’t that be nice? The purpose was just an activity for myself. As I mentioned, I was in the midst (I still am) of writing another issue of The Coroner and needed a little break. It isn’t because I’m having a block, I just felt like briefly writing something else. And what better way to distract my muse than to take a literary detour?

I spent another five minutes editing the work, just to give it a brief polish. I promise I didn’t change anything else. I also didn’t promise my muse had anything good to say, either.

All the best,

Nick.
