Amazing creatures we Travellers met in our journeys - Original tale

in #writing6 years ago

In my collection of short stories about imaginary journeys, there will be a part about imaginary creatures. Here is the first part of that chapter. Enjoy :D (Previous tales here)

This part of my "Atlas of the Travellers' Destinations" (working title, we'll see what the Editor will say) is about the creatures we met in our journeys. And this first part of that part is about a very interesting creature we all (we Travellers) met here and there.

I'm talking about the giant race of the Lampposts. Well, they look like lampposts, and they mostly do what light posts do, but they are instead an intelligent, peaceful and sensible species.

Lampposts live outside the cities, mostly, in lined up groups. Each individual spends his life alone, but not so far from others of his community. This way, each Lamppost has some free space around him that let him to move around when he wants too. Because of their size, adult Lampposts need a certain space for their movements, so to be sure not to damage any being around them. They don't move that much, though.

Groups of Lampposts are connected  by wires in long lines running along the land. They are one of the few cases of linear community. The wires are extensions of their arms so that, in a way, they hold their hands.

Some Lampposts - the most important ones, I guess - are connected to three or more of their kind. But usually a Lamppost has just two close neighbours. They can communicate with the other mates of their line though, using some kind of word-of-mouth.

Lampposts have two faithful allies: birds and cable guys. As regard birds, the relationship is a form of mutual assistance: birds carries news and gossip from other communities of Lampposts, too far to be connected each other. The Lampposts give to birds safe places to perch on together and rest.

As regard the cable guys, they are probably volunteer servants. They do manteinance and keep the space around the Lampposts free and clean. When a line of Lampposts runs through a wood, the cable guys cut the trees around the line, so to avoid accidental contacts between poles, wires and tree branches. In our opinion, though, communities of Lampposts don't like so much to extend across the woods. But what they hate the most is being chained to a house. If you want to torture a Lamppole, build a house stuck on him. They love open spaces, desert plains, remote highways and so on.

I talked to some traveller that reported to have had long chats with the Lampposts. They said that the Lampposts are kind and polite, very good at listening and very empathetic. Personally I just exchanged with them a nod. I'm a little scared by their giant size, I confess.

The average lifespan of a Lamppost is unknown but it lasts at least some decades. When they die, the wires connecting them to their line fall down - what further demonstrates that they are a very social species.
