Sensitive Data, Eavesdropping, Hacking: How Are The Heads of State's Phones Secure?

in #writing6 years ago (edited)

The President of the United States isn't taking care of that even if the phones's security of the leaders is an essential stake. This article will show you the risks and the means put in place to avoid them.

Donald Trump is not very stickler for the protection of his smartphone. Until 2017, he used a Samsung Galaxy S3, which is no longer updated since 2015. In late May, Politico reported that the billionaire refused to comply with the inspection protocol of its iPhone. He would own two phone: one for Twitter and one for his phone calls. This decision raises an important issue: The protection of telecommunications leaders and governments. What are the solutions envisaged to avoid the risks of listening and piracy?

Because of their status, heads of state are obliged to exchange confidential information. Simple conversations can have diplomatic, economic or/and political consequences. If data leaks or if hackers gain control of a leader's phone, the impact can be dramatic.

Today, we mostly use phones that are created either by Americans or by Chinese. Even if the operators are Dutch, we can’t know exactly what the providers do with the phones they produce. We can’t afford any imprecision in this area especially given the exchanges that can happens at the state level.

Use ultra-secure but not functional devices

End-to-end encryption of communications is a necessity for heads of state. Constructers have developed very secure devices but with an ergonomics somewhat outdated. For example, in the United States, Boeing developed the Boeing Black, a smartphone that can self-destruct if there is a problem.

Securing consumer smartphones

Securing consumer devices seems to be the preferred solution for presidents and leaders. Barack Obama, for example, managed to get a Blackberry with the adding of a SecurVoice software. Unfortunately for him, once the Blackberry exceeded, it took years for him to get back a smartphone.

"I was given the phone and I was told," Mr. President, for security reasons, you can’t take pictures, you can’t text, the phone doesn’t work, you can’t not put music on it ... "" said Barack Obama on the set of the Tonight Show, "Roughly, it looks like a phone for three-year-old child ...".

If consumer smartphones have their success with leaders, their use is prohibited for the most sensitive files. For subjects that are really considered Secret Defense, there is absolutely nothing that goes through the mobile phones. For that, they continue to use landline phones, extremely advanced security solutions and internal networks.

  • And it's a really good thing when you see that an OnePlus 6 can be hacked easly...

  • For me, all of their communications should be anonymous. As yours activity on internet! Want to know how? This article has been made for you.

they listening to everybody

Are you speaking of the governments?

yep, and the hackers

Take a look at this article which I have resteemed, that's disturbing...

FYI, since patriot act... providers like ATT VERIZON and TMO, harden the security for government employees. ATT, formerly Bell South has majority of gov contracts working through private switches.

My two cents? Who gives a crap. I mean seriously, people have right to privacy. That and this is another attempt to get access to otherwise sensitive communications.

We have the right of privacy on paper but not IRL... Welcome in our capitalist world where everything possible is monetize!

I disagree, privacy is possible in every facet of life. But Im finding too many people lay down their rights as the government usurps more power. Stop it.

Google UCC 1-308.

Privacy isn't in governments programs you know. That's an utopia that they are trying to make us believe. But I'm not saying that we can't do anything at our scale to protect our privacy, on the contrary! My steemit blog is based on that and I'm putting my hope in a big decentralization. And you, what's your plan to get more privacy by yourself?

I will be just a citizen, soon. Not owned by state or federal gov.

I guess what bothered me about this article, is the view that Obama did it right, Trump was wrong. Tbh, i care for neither more then the other.

But consider, that Obama:

  1. Did business in secret with Iran
  2. Aided an enemy state Afghanistan (patriot act wasnt amended)
  3. Helped run pay for play with Hillary
  4. Colluded with other state officials like DOJ, to destabilize other nations.
  5. Had been proven to have terrorist ties with MB

So let me ask, do you think him swapping his phone out was routine and necessary as an enemy of the state? Or was it a well thought out means to destroy evidence that couldve been used against him.

Dont get me wrong Trump isnt a saint... but he has not openly assisted our known enemies.

Im apolitical, I dont give two qualms about any party as they all deprive the rights of their constituents. And while they have party lines drawn they continue to usurp power that was meant for us, the people.

I've never said that Obama is the good one and that Trump is the bad one because that's not the purpose of this article. You're making interpretations of what I said and I don't agree with them. Obama is "loved" by the entire world and Trump is hated but for me, they just made a different image of themselves. Things that governments say to the world is just the visible part of the iceberg, we all know that.
And I agree with you, Obama is far away of being clean. For example, he's the US president who've sent back the more refugees in the history of the State even if he represented the first black president and the hope that brought his origin.
And yes it's really possible that this phone was more to destroy evidence that could've been used against him but it was also to protect US information that could've been used against the USA.
The actions, the reactions and the way that a leader rules his country always has different purposes/causes and can always be interpreted in different ways.
(I'm still learning English so if you don't understand something, just tell me ;-))
