The seismic waves have put the seismographs of most of Africa in motion, then they crossed the Atlantic Ocean, they arrived in Chile and then went to New Zealand, Canada and even to Hawaii – about 17,000 km away from the source.

The first surprise is that the sensors of the seismographs have “worked” for over 20 minutes, which led to the hypothesis of a violent earthquake near Mayotte. of the African island. But it turned out that there had been no earthquakes, and this not only in the vicinity of the island, but across the planet. «I had never seen anything like this», comments Göran Ekström, a seismologist at Columbia University (USA), «not only because the seismic waves have affected the whole planet, but also because they had a very low frequency, which is not typical of a “normal earthquake.” In short, a beautiful enigma that comes directly from the heart of the Earth.

WILL A NEW ISLAND BE BORN? The only possible correlation between the wave train and the point of origin is the swarm of small earthquakes recorded in that area since last May. The most intense, of magnitude 5.8, occurred just in May: what is happening at that point of the planet?

At the moment the most concrete hypothesis on the table is that advanced by the French Geological Survey (BRGM, Bureau de Recherches Géologiques and Minières), according to which it can not be excluded that this is the initial phase of a new volcanic activity center at the bottom of the ‘Ocean. Mayotte itself, like other small islands in the area, are the result of volcanic eruptions in recent millennia: for the BRGM researchers it is possible that a magmatic movement is taking place that until now had escaped geologists because that portion of the planet did not It has never been studied in detail.

To support the hypothesis put forward by the BRGM is the fact that earthquakes with low frequency seismic waves are typical of an intense volcanic activity. There are numerous records in the vicinity of the Nyragongo volcano, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where the existence of a continuously moving magma chamber is known. Seismic phenomena accompanied by similar waves have also been recorded near the volcano Kilauea, in Hawaii, which this year has produced almost sixty. It is therefore a possibility: on the depths of the Indian Ocean, near Mayotte, magma may soon emerge, which may one day be a new island.
