Putri Hijau is a legend that is popular in North Sumatra and Aceh.

This story tells of the beauty of a girl who emits green light at night.

The girl's name was Putri Hijau who was the younger sister of King Mambang Yazid from the Tanah Deli Kingdom.

This beauty and green light apparently attracted a king from Aceh and wanted to marry him.

However, in the end the attempt to propose to Putri Hijau was rejected and ended in war between the two kingdoms.

The Green Princess

Previously, in North Sumatra there was the Deli Kingdom whose king had three children, namely Mambang Yazid, Putri Hijau, and Mambang Khayali.

King Deli is old and will meet his death. Before he died, the king asked his three children to look after each other.

After the king died, Mambang Yazid as the eldest son succeeded his father. He did not forget his responsibility to look after his younger siblings.

Mambang Yazid and his two sisters, Putri Hijau and Mambang Khayali are very loved by their people.

As time goes by, Putri Hijau and Mambang Khayali grow into mature and wise figures.

Putri Hijau transformed into a very beautiful girl.

It also has the feature of being able to emit green light.

The princess really liked to walk in the royal gardens at night, especially when the moon was full.

Visible as far as Aceh

One night when the full moon was shining brightly, Putri Hijau was walking in the garden. The green light that radiated from his body was said to be visible as far as the Kingdom of Aceh.

The King of Aceh was surprised. He then ordered his trusted people to find out where the light came from.

After searching for a long time, the trusted person of the king of Aceh discovered that the light rays came from Putri Hijau, the sister of the King of Deli, Mambang Yazid.

The king of Aceh was attracted by the charm of the Green Princess and wanted to ask for her hand as queen consort. He also ordered his trusted people to convey his proposal.

When he arrived in the Deli Kingdom, the Acehnese king's confidant expressed his intention to propose to Putri Hijau.

However, Putri Hijau felt that she did not want to get married. This was conveyed gently by his older brother, Mambang Yazid.

After that, people from Aceh returned. He then conveyed to the king of Aceh that Putri Hijau rejected his proposal.

Putri Hijau was arrested
Hearing this, the king of Aceh felt insulted and angry. He then ordered all his troops to prepare to attack the Tanah Deli Kingdom.

The King of Aceh also ordered the king of Deli, Mambang Yazid, to hand over Putri Hijau so that war would not occur.

However, King Mambang Yazid politely refused this request. As a result, war broke out between Tanah Deli and Aceh.

The war was very fierce. The Acehnese troops then tried to disrupt the concentration of the Tanah Deli troops.

Acehnese troops filled their cannons with gold jewelry. This strategy succeeded in diverting the Tanah Deli troops.

As a result, Tanah Deli lost the war and was conquered.

Putri Hijau was captured and taken to Aceh in a glass coffin using a ship. When she arrived in Aceh, Putri Hijau asked for a ceremony to be held to lower herself.

However, just as the ceremony was starting, a storm and strong winds hit. From the sea, a dragon emerged which was the incarnation of Mambang Yazid, Putri Hijau's older brother who lost the war. Putri Hijau was rescued and taken to the sea by her brother.

I only got a glimpse of folklore, this is a very vital story in Central Aceh.
