Infected by a mode...
I saw how that works a few years ago. I had a flower stand in Atlanta and could make a good profit if I bought the older flowers from the distributors.
Retail shops needed to buy very fresh flowers since they might have to keep them in their shops for a while before a customer bought them. But I was same day sales on the street. The distributors were very happy to see me and would sell me the older flowers very cheap. Retailers would not buy them. They were nice flowers but they needed to be sold right away. Which is something I could do.
This... "buying older, not very fresh" infected everything. When shopping for produce I would buy the clearance items. The clothes I wore were second hand.
One day I bought some not so fresh asparagus. I got very, very sick. May have been a touch of food poisoning. I was careful not to buy old produce and I started to buy only fresh fresh flowers. I had to pay more for them but I could also sell them for a little more.
It had been a mode that ran through everything.
