Four Pet Rabbits - 13 May 2024

We’ve had some really warm days here lately so I decided to visit my friends who live in the countryside.

When I finally got to their house they were very busily unloading some rabbits from the back of their van. They didn’t actually have to buy the rabbits; the four rabbits they got were free as their owner did not have enough time to look after them. My friends were very excited to be able to offer a section of their garden to these gentle creatures. Let me introduce them to you - none of them had names :

This couple has shared a cage for a long while so they get on really well and the two rabbits are very docile and relaxed. The male seems to have a problem in one eye and seems to be infertile so there are no dangers of ‘overpopulation’ or some Watership Down rabbit overpopulation scenario. Incidentally apart from that explanation I’ve just linked to I also found this rather scary video here of the same classic story.

These other two rabbits are both females and are actually much bigger than the other couple of rabbits. They do not know each other that well and seem to prefer ‘solitude’. Although the four rabbits come from the same household they're not a cohesive unit and so I wonder whether or not they will get on together.

After the long trip my friends decided to let the rabbit troop free in an enclosed area of their garden. I only took one photo because it was getting a bit late. One of the rabbits was a little bit unsure about the stinging nettle nearby - see the photo below:

My friends also assured me that they will be cleaning and refurbishing their old rabbit huts for them and have invited me to return so we can ‘record’ their housing and life in their new environment.
