Mid Spring Garden Update

in #garden17 days ago

Ahhhh, Spring! The time when a young man's fancy turns to romance. Mine has turned to gardening! Things are really starting to take off here in Northwestern BC Canada, and my yard is much greener than it was for my early Spring update. Come along and enjoy dozens of photos of the garden and individual plants!

22.JPG

Gorgeous lilac bushes in my neighborhood! In the past few days, warmer weather and a downpour of rain brought out the blossoms. It seems everything is on the verge of flowering.

21.JPG

The dandelions are starting to turn, a sure sign that Spring is wearing on!

23.JPG

Back in my yard, this lilac flower is just opening up today - the first on the bush.

24.JPG

Another sign of mid-Spring is early-Spring flowers finishing up, like these daffodils. They've been great to have around the past few weeks!

25.JPG

That will be a purple Japanese iris in a month or so.

26.JPG

Strawberries! I bought a couple seedlings from the local farmers market, and transplanted them into the main garden. We'll see how they do.

27.JPG

More potatoes going in! These are "yukon gold".

28.JPG

A few "russet".

29.JPG

A whole bunch of "red nugget"! The white stuff is diatomaceous earth, an inert natural substance that repels insects. I'm hoping it will keep worms/larva away from my potatoes this year!

30.JPG

Some basil growing in a container. Some leaves started going brown, so I think it got too much rainwater recently. I'll help it dry out a little and it should be fine. Smells great!

31.JPG

Green shelling peas are a little slow, but they're coming now.

32.JPG

Green snow peas are a bit further ahead. Looking forward to munching those sweet pods in a couple weeks! I will need to build a trellis for them soon.

33.JPG

This is "Bert's lettuce", a green leaf variety I've been growing for several years. I got the seeds from my late friend Bert, and I think about him every time I plant it, or eat it. He'd be happy to know I'm still enjoying it!

34.JPG

Some kind of Swedish lettuce variant I've never tried before. It's kind of cute.

35.JPG

That's a beast of a young garlic plant! It has about 2 months until harvest at this point.

36.JPG

The first patch of potatoes I sowed appears! Good to see these dark green tufts showing up.

37.JPG

This is orache, aka "mountain spinach", a hardy plant that grows well in dry conditions but produces tasty and nutritious purple leaves that are similar to spinach. I've grown it before and it can become quite large.

38.JPG

Somebody has been digging away at my spinach seeds! About half the row has been scratched away by little paws at various times. I'm not impressed.

39.JPG

Aha! It's the neighbor's cat. That explains the cat piss and crap all over the place! Great detective work. Now, what to do about it? Water balloons, perhaps. ; D

40.JPG

I picked up a few red bell pepper seedlings to transplant in, at the farmers market today. I don't have any seeds of my own, otherwise I'd be growing those. Maybe I'll save some seeds from these ones if they turn out well. I'm not overly-experienced when it comes to peppers, but I've grown them before.

41.JPG

I have 2 blueberry plants that I acquired last July. I don't know if they will flower this year or not, but I'm happy they survived the Winter.

01.jpg

I also have an apple tree that I got last Autumn. Over the past month it has come to life, so I took a photo every couple days.

I put together a time-lapse which shows the last month in 10 seconds:

A look from above, showing a ring of oregano plants under the apple tree:

They're small now, but I plan to flavour a lot of pasta sauce with this oregano in a few months!

Inside, I've got a few plants starting in cups...

42.JPG

Pumpkins! They're looking healthy and eager to go into the garden.

43.JPG

My 8 reclining buddha plants, 3 weeks old. They'll go out in the garden in about a month.

The next set of leaves is looking lush! And beginning to smell good, too.

Back out in the garden, here are the past few yard update photos:

The plants are finally starting to show up in the shot. The yard is looking greener and more alive. The trees are filling in with fresh leaves. Pretty much everything has been planted (except the tomatoes), and a lot of it is growing. Spring is in full swing!

Have a look at the past 8 weeks in my little backyard garden:

Expect to see those garden beds full of green vegetation in my late Spring update next month! Until then, follow me on Blurt for regular updates on all these plants, and more. If you're gardening, I wish you a great season. Feel free to ask questions, give advice, etc. Thank you for visiting my garden and please come back soon!

Grow in peace.
