Did you know Brazil got its name from the Brazilian nut (not the other way around)
Brazil's name comes from a different source: the brazilwood tree. Here's why:
- Brazilwood: This tree was once plentiful along the Brazilian coast and produces a deep red dye prized by the European textile industry.
- Land of Brazil: Early European explorers and merchants called the land "Terra do Brasil" (Land of Brazil) because of the brazilwood trade.
- The Nut Came Later: The Brazilian nut, native to the Amazon rainforest, wasn't known to Europeans until much later, after Brazil already had its name.
