Nature’s gifts to our planet are the millions of species that we know and love, and many more that remain to be discovered. Unfortunately, human beings have irrevocably upset the balance of nature and, as a result, the world is facing the greatest rate of extinction since we lost the dinosaurs more than 60 million years ago. But unlike the fate of the dinosaurs, the rapid extinction of species in our world today is the result of human activity.
The unprecedented global destruction and rapid reduction of plant and wildlife populations are directly linked to causes driven by human activity: climate change, deforestation, habitat loss, trafficking and poaching, unsustainable agriculture, pollution, and pesticides to name a few. The impacts are far-reaching.
If we do not act now, extinction may be humanity’s most enduring legacy. Here are some quick facts on the current wave of extinction and additional information about this problem here.
All living things have an intrinsic value, and each plays a unique role in the complex web of life. We must work together to protect endangered and threatened species: bees, coral reefs, elephants, giraffes, insects, whales and more.
The good news is that the rate of extinctions can still be slowed, and many of our declining, threatened and endangered species can still recover if we work together now to build a united global movement of consumers, voters, educators, faith leaders, and scientists to demand immediate action.
Earth Day Network is asking people to join our Protect our Species campaign. Our goals are to:
Educate and raise awareness about the accelerating rate of extinction of millions of species and the causes and consequences of this phenomenon.
Achieve major policy victories that protect broad groups of species as well as individual species and their habitats.
Build and activate a global movement that embraces nature and its values.
Encourage individual actions such as adopting a plant-based diet and stopping pesticide and herbicide use. source

I always post this poem down at the bottom of my posts. It is one that has become so near and dear to my heart. I only post the most famous part of it, but, wanted to post it in its entirety today.
i cried the way women on tv do
folding at the middle
like a five pound note.
i called the boy who use to love me
tried to ‘okay’ my voice
i said hello
he said warsan, what’s wrong, what’s happened?
and these are what my prayers look like;
dear god
i come from two countries
one is thirsty
the other is on fire
both need water.
i held an atlas in my lap
ran my fingers across the whole world
and whispered,
"where does it hurt?"
it answered,
"everywhere"

I haven't driven a car or any other motor vehicle for five years, does that count? I walk, ride a bicycle, or take public transportation everywhere I go.

I take public transportation most days, but, will not lie to you. I need to use the car as things are out of my reach, but, will always err to the alternate public transportation when possible.

A beautiful post for Earth day, its time for us all to do our bit to help protect and preserve our planet without a doubt, some improvements have been made but we as a human race are still doing so much damage the planet and we all need to come to our senses, and the world leaders as well and changes are needed now or I fear what state the planet will e in for our grandchildren generation
Well, depending on how long the current Grand Solar Minimum endures, the human race may not last that long. When the current GSM ends, large parts of this planet are going to become completely uninhabitable very suddenly. We are in the endgame now, and well past the point of no return. Sic Transit Gloria Mundi.

We all do need to do our bit and if everyone just did a small bit for Mother Earth, I cannot help but think it will help in some way.
I fear for my children and those generations that come after me. We are a race of taking what we need without worrying about the consequences, or at times, just pushing the problem off on another generation.

Yes exactly, often people choose to do o thing because of the what difference can I make on my own Logic, but if we all do our little bit together it can be a massive effort and have a huge impact

I do think we have finally, finally gotten the message and time will tell how well we have put it into action. Most things, we probably won't be able to see in our lifetime, but, just like a tree or anything else like that, we don't do it for us, but, for down the road.
We need to stop being an instant gratification nation!

Those are some lovely and colorful blooms! I was informed of Earth Day by Alexa, yes she talks to me now and again, but it is grudgingly. Typical lol. Yes! I am in favor of Earth day to get the word out and as a reminder to folks. You did a great job sharing the message! I hope to squeeze in a post on Earth Day later after my other one flails around for a while lol.

Man's impact of the environment is concerning to say the least. While the impact cannot be eliminated, it can be reduced and we need to do better.

Importance of this topic cannot be overemphasized. All you wrote about is painful truth. But the thing is (and it is a good news) we can do everything to reduce our influence on the environment every day. And teach our children not with words but with our acts.
Unfortunatly, a lot of people are not educated enough about the subject, and it also depends on us, not only on goverments.
Recently, and I still remember that feeling, my colleague said he do not understand why you need to sort the garbage...
