How much time do you spend on screens?

in #life5 years ago (edited)

A long time ago, I was quite used to being limited on how long I can use those digital screens - no matter they’re smartphones, tablets, desktop computers, laptops, etc, with the only exception being televisions but I rarely watch the TV anyways. My mum did that for the sake of the health of our vision (I started wearing glasses since a pretty young age because I was used to read comic books while lying down, but that’s another story), but as time passed we got less strict on the limitation, partly due to how much phones can do compared to the past and it’s getting harder and harder to live with the limitation. Now, the rule doesn’t exist anymore in my house, but I don’t think that’s a valid reason to use the screen all day every day. I mean, overusing them can still cause harm after all.

In school, I use my laptop a lot - in class, after class, in the dorm, sometimes even before class if I have nothing else to do. I can’t really count the amount of hours I spend on it per day, but I expect it to sit around 6 hours or more since I really use it for almost everything, from note-taking to coding to chatting and gaming. Probably I even hit 12 hours or more during assignment deadlines, unhealthy enough. That does not include the time I spend on my phone yet, so...imagine yourself, maybe?

Since I’m now on a semester break, I am naturally interested in how much time I spend on the screens I have per day. Did it became more or less?

Source

To be honest, I’m not using my laptop a lot these days, even with the fact that I have quite a number of games installed on it to be cleared in this holiday (another fact: I haven’t played even one of them, money well spent during last Steam sales). Probably it’s because I have access to the iPad at home so I turned my attention to it instead, using it for Discord and games. That’s partly the reason why I have those circle-tapping gaming videos in my Steemit blog, I did spent quite an amount of time on it. Let’s see how much time I have spent on the device today.

(Sorry for a screenshot full of Chinese, it’s the language on the device and I’m not the only user of it so changing it is not so nice.)

2 hours with only 1 hour and 1 minute on Cytus? That’s surprisingly low. Although it’s probably because I’m quite busy today so I’m not playing the game a lot. And as you can see, I spent a majority of the remaining time on Discord. With this, I guess I have the credibility to actually complain that Discord’s emoji autocompletion and emoji picker is really slow and sluggish on an old device like this iPad Air, I would rather use it on an old Android device instead of this.

Well that’s kinda out of topic, so let’s go back to it by looking at the overall time spent on it for past 7 days.

So on average, I spend 2 and a half hours a day, with the game Cytus taking 6 hours over the week and Discord following close behind with almost 5 hours. There’s a huge spike of time spent on Friday...I guess it’s caused by my brother playing with the BandLab app on that day together with me writing posts in the Photos app (it uploads to YouTube while Share2Steem does the reposting) as well as the Google Docs app. Almost no record for Sunday, because the entire family spent the entire day outdoors. Good for the eyes!

In fact, the screenshot above is taken before I finish writing this post, so the total time isn’t that accurate. Probably add another hour for today because that’s approximately the amount of time I spend typing in the Google Docs app today. We can also continue counting the time I spent in the Safari app uploading the images to my Vornix site, but I think it’s neglectable?

We’ll take a look at the record on my phone then. Android doesn’t seem to have a screen usage monitor built-in, and the closest one I found is in the battery section of the settings app.

4 hours and a little more...wew, that’s more than what I expected.

Since Android doesn’t record the amount of time spent per app for me, so I should do the counting myself then. I am taking care of a few mobile games on this phone, so I do some “daily tasks” for them every day. I took like 20 minutes in Vainglory today for the first win of the day, 30 minutes in Tower of Saviors to clear events, and another 15 minutes in Sdorica to do their daily quests. I guess I spent around 30 to 40 minutes in the Patriko app doing my daily supports for #powerhousecreatives and reading a few other posts, another 20 to 30 minutes in the Spotify app, and dumped the rest in the Discord app. That kinda translates to around 2 hours more of Discord...not sure that's insane or impressive, wew.

Some simple addition will easily show that I am looking at screens for about 6 to 7 hours a day with the stats above, and that's just an approximated value, it might be more! Frankly speaking, I'm a little shocked to know that I'm staring at these rectangle-shaped light-emitting stuff for so many hours a day. I'm even trying to not look at the screen when typing now, lol.

Although no research really showed that modern screens can cause significant damage to humans over prolonged usage, but it's still a fact that they emit radiation and cause eye sore if not other problems with incorrect usage. I might really have to stop being a total Discord addict, or at least pick up the habit of leaving the screen every half an hour for the eyes to get some rest. I believe this habit is actually crucial to vision health in the long term as screens will be more and more common around us and we will have to use them more and more. Technology is growing and I can't stop that, but I can probably stop them from creating more problems for me. Most of the times it's not the technology's fault, but the user's :)

If your work or daily life doesn't really rely on the use of screens, probably research a little on how much time you spend on those devices per day and you might be surprised. If you have to use screens a lot like I do, try picking up habits that are beneficial to your eyesight, or get other protective mechanisms like a good blue light filter on your glasses, if you have one.

Now it's time for me to give my eyes a good rest, see you next time!

iPad Air being slow and sluggish? laughs while using my first generation iPad Mini which barely can support any new apps but still runs Asphalt 8 well

From your screen time, I can say I'm worse than yours (usage statistic of my phone for the past 7 days):-
SnapShot20190213T025229.jpg

My phone's too potato for a blue light filter. Only installed it once during the trip to Langkawi and Thailand last year due to my phone got too bright in the bus despite my phone's in the lowest brightness setting haha. But definitely not for gaming (yes the system can kill it anytime which is a pain), just using it for normal web browsing.

But honestly speaking, till today despite high screen time (includes my phone, my iPad and the desktop), I'm not even wearing spectacles (well I have a pair of false spectacles with me purely just to look cool). I guess the #1 reason why people wear spectacles is due to turning their phones WAY too bright, which is a burden to your eyes. People tend to turn their phone's brightness too bright till the backlight can be seen on their face (imagine a mini spotlight shining at you when you look at your phone), which I don't understand why. To me, I only turn my screen brightness up if it's bright outside. Else, I'll just leave like this 24/7:-

Oh before I forget, I heard carrots are good for your eyesight. Go nom more of them to heal your eyes up :nom:

That is called optimization...on iOS, they are either godlike or does-not-exist. Discord needs more help with this lol, or probably better, just stop reusing the code they use on Mac... (Not sure who told me about this, not sure it's true or not anyways)

My screen protector has some blue light filtering properties, so that does the job partially. I was used to use Twilight for a software blue light filtering until Android imposed a limitation so that apps cannot draw over the notification panel, making it partially broken. Huawei has their own "Eye Comfort" mode but the yellow tint it gives is ugly lol. Still prefer the one that comes on iOS devices, strong and customizable enough. (Rare footage of me complimenting iOS!)

There aren't scientific proof saying that having too much brightness on screens can cause harm in the long term either. Glare and screen clarity also affects the strain it puts on the eyes, so there are a lot more to consider...better make it easy, as long as your eyes feel tired, stop. Lol.

False spectacles to look cool? I rarely see them...be grateful that your eyesight is still great lol. Can I assume that Misty's glasses are fake too?

Yeah indeed that there isn't much scientific proof that relates screen brightness and eye health, but somehow to me turning up the brightness setting in unnecessary times (especially in the dark) isn't always a wise idea, no matter it's proven or not. Why burdening your eyes though?

Speaking back of my iPad, it has reached the end of Apple's iOS support (currently at iOS 9.3.4 which no more iOS updates after this :pain:), which means I can't use Discord there (requires iOS 10 or above), OK whatever. But iOS' optimisation is really nice, despite my iPad's potato hardware specifications, it can still keeps an app up without being killed in the background.

Misty's glasses is fake? No. Her glasses are real according to what I wrote back then. I'll never tell you that I have a fetish on glasses.

Not only your eyes, but also your battery life :) screens take a big part of battery usage. I miss the days where I could use black themes to save power on OLED screens...now this LED screen takes as much energy as it does all day long, reee.

Same for the iPad 3, but it still runs Vainglory fine...we don't talk about apps that don't go through optimisations here (like the Messenger app, screw that). Not sure about killing in background, but it doesn't randomly kill currently running apps. Remember the days of iOS 7/8? We had crashes all day every day, lol.

Did you just exposed your fetish on glasses? That's okay I have a weirder fetish. Not telling you anyways.

If I think about it... it becomes scary. I'm going to hide in the bathroom and at least not stay on the screen for 5 minutes.

The question should become how much time do we spend off the screen... Anyone?

...that is a very good question. I can't answer that...

I think I spend quite a considerable amount of time off the screen because I take very long showers (and sleep a lot). But still I really can't recall the real amount of time I spend off the screen...

I spend entirely too much time staring at screens. I am a little older so there was no need for my mother to put limitations on those things. I still stared at a screen when I was young though. It was just a TV screen playing Nintendo. Cell phones were barely used back when I was young.

Yeah, and pretty much the usual reminder of "don't watch the TV too closely" or something like that...(whenever applicable). Btw is there a Nintendo gaming device that connects with a TV? I haven't heard of one 🤔 probably I skipped the years when they were dominating the entertainment scene...

I'm hopelessly trying to catch up with your blog @lilacse, I've neglected so many friends. Not by choice, but so busy lately it's difficult, and guess what I'm busy on.. A screen!

I think about this quite a bit.

I remember as a child, we watched tons of TV, which I don't anymore, because I am like you in this aspect. I don't have much interest for it, or time for that matter. My entertainment, comes in the form of youtube videos usually. The kind that are extremely boring and take copious amounts of brain power to understand. This is entertainment for me. lol.

So, I've had 20/20 vision my entire life, and I'm pretty sure it's still quite good, not 20/20 but not far from it. I deviate from the norm in my family in this sense. I used to look at the sun as a kid.

I'm really very fortunate, to have such decent eye sight my entire life, but I can feel my age starting to kick in, and though my sight is still pretty darn good, focusing is slowing a little, as in, it takes a little longer for my eyes to adjust to different light settings and distance, which I think is normal in the aging process.

Screens will speed this process up, there is not much question in my mind about it. Currently, I use night settings for my screen to auto kick in at 9 PM, and it helps some with the strain, but I feel it's probably not super effective.

I always use dark mode on Steemit, Busy, eSteem, ect.. Services without dark mode, are a nightmare for my eyes. The white light just hurts my eyes altogether. I believe we will see some advances in tech to counteract this I hope.

I feel like my comment is starting to turn into a legit post, and probably still could talk more on this.

I saw a comment here about keeping phone light low, only raising it in the sun. I also do this. Mostly to save battery.

How many hours of screen time a day.. Shit man, probably 15 at least. 7 days a week. Not good for the eye's, but the online space is where I've decided to build my future, so .. As with everything, I pretty much push myself to the max.

I was addicted to agar.io forever, so anything with circles/bubbles is a bad idea for me, I better not go near this game.

Take your time dude, the content isn't going anywhere and the blockchain is here to stay 😛 Plus, I have assignments that require me to run a blog for assignment purposes as well as all those engaging with classmates within the blogging platform...so updates here will go a little slower. I'm still trying to get at least 2 posts up per week though, but that's not fast at all, hehe.

You're indeed pretty lucky to have near-perfect eyesight until now...not sure if there's something to do with the gene, but some peeps really don't need eyeglasses for life while some has their degree of shortsightedness flying like a rocket throughout their entire teenage years. I guess I'm quite lucky to have it stuck at some not-too-serious value, too. I don't want to spend too much on glasses 😂

Actually most night light filters aren't really effective, unless you're using something like flux on the PC and Twilight on phones (and only if the phone is using a pretty old version of Android, it does not work very well on new ones due to Android limitations). My night filter is set to kick in at 7pm and it's a pretty strong one, plus my wallpaper...uh, it's really warm. From what I feel, it doesn't really reduce the strain but it will help with sleeping if you have to use the PC before sleeping. So, still promoting rest as well :3

Screenshot_20190302_012628.png

I actually use light theme for my desktop lol. The dark parts are the window title bars and the bottom panel as well as Firefox because most websites do not have a dark theme. I tried going dark mode for everything but it didn't end well because everything looks like blending into each other with similar colours. Personally I prefer more contrast than the actual colour theme because contrast is what determines if your eyes can read the content easily and reduce strain as an effect, but please do not show me a colour theme that goes like blue background with yellow text...I would dump a pile of Yellow Pages right in their face if someone did, lol.

Actually technology is already helping a lot in reducing eye strain and overall eye damage when facing screens. LED screens are emitting pretty low level of radiation compared to their old friends in the past; high screen resolutions prevented our eyes from trying to analyze the squares of the pixels, hence reducing strain as well; and screens that come with anti-glare features are just helping even more. As we reach higher and higher screen DPI, the scientists will find ways to reduce light spots more and more efficiently and it will reduce whatever pain your eyes feel when facing white screens...iPads already have this as an accessibility feature, but I treat it as a power saving feature, lol.

You are addicted to circles and bubbles? Now I feel bad for showing some osu! videos in the past, maybe I'll just hope that you don't get what I'm saying and ignore it, hehe, although you might have watched the Cytus vids I uploaded a few posts before this one...

Same here i had started to wear spectacles too at a very young age😂
But nowadays my degree keeps increasing because i stare too much on my smartphone's screen.. I guess it's best to let our eyes rest once in a while when staring for too long on the screen.

Posted using Partiko Android

To be honest, I don't really have huge increase in my degree of short-sightedness even with my screen usage. They kept on growing before I have those screens though, weird. But I'm not staring at my smartphone's screen for too long at one time too, probably that helped a little.

Posted using Partiko Android

Ah i see.. Maybe you used too much of your eyes for reading that's why it will increase. I heard they said sometimes if you gt the wrong degree for your spectacles, your degree will increase very fast too cse your eyes will used more strength to get use to the spectacle lens.
Yea..maybe stare at more green trees for 30mins everyday it will helps maintain your degree too..tried it before and it works but that time i totally avoid looking at any screen and let my eye rest more... Surprisingly my degree went down a little after that...

Posted using Partiko Android

Sooooooooooo you are telling me that it is actually really possible to get the degree down to some extent without surgeries? Now you've got me motivated. Gotta stare outside after I complete this post... 😂

Posted using Partiko Android

Yess! Hahaha.. Last time i actually try not to wear my spectacles for a week and keep staring at green trees.. After that i went to check my eyes.. The degree just went down surprisingly 😂
Haha. Yesh.. Its possible but really need to be consistent..

Posted using Partiko Android

Yes far too long on screens and I always try to look outside the window periodically as I am at my desk a lot at work. Then at home! Basically on the whole time haha.

Yes it's important to rest the eyes but I think this "blue light" and radiation thing is a myth? Agree that it's up to the user to do what is necessary to protect eye health and of course have regular check ups with opticians 🙂

Posted using Partiko Android

Radiation can be detected by devices so it's not a myth that they do emit radiation, but whether they cause damage or not is pretty much a myth. Lab results don't tell that they are harmful even after prolonged usage, anyways. Plus, light is a radiation by itself, lol.

Blue light on the other hand isn't really a myth, but it's just about the eye strain and sleep quality after using the screens. To be honest, filtering the blue light won't do much if your house is lightened up by white lights since they also contribute those wavelengths that keep you awake. The eyes will also feel more tired naturally with a filter like that because it tells them that it's night and it's time to get rest 😂 So some people like me love to use them, while some don't.

I haven't went to the opticians for quite some time... probably they will force me to change glasses again if I visit them 😂

Posted using Partiko Android

OK, yea light radiation of course from the phone screen, it's a light source after all 😉 but phones go through rigorous testing before being released to the public so the radiation levels do not (or at least should not) exceed dangerous levels.

And blue light levels in phones, although do exist, are not at such the high levels that paranoia surrounding the issue suggests (there have been BBC bulletins about it all and blue light protection scams in the past) - again, not to the high levels that it causes damage.

Of course, if the lights are off and you are looking at a phone screen on full brightness then that will strain your eyes and it's recommended NOT to look at your phone 30 minutes before going to bed. Not because of eye damage but it keeps the brain far too alert and then keeps you awake longer.

All this talk of bed is making me want to sleep though haha 😂

I'm not sure I'd be brave enough to try to track my screen time... 😂

You makes some great points, and I do try to take regular breaks from all screens during the day. Speaking of breaks, hope you're enjoying your semester break! 😊

Frankly speaking I am not really brave enough to do so initially...it's like "well should I face the crap that I created" or something like that. But then I have to look at the problem to solve it anyways 😂

Thanks and I'm indeed enjoying my semester break :) Just started playing an ancient game yesterday...screen time is pretty hard to control, lol.

Posted using Partiko Android

I spend 3 hrs and 17 m a day and 23 hours a week total on my phone. Probably a lot more total if I added how many hours I spend on online assignments.
