#WednesdayWalk: Perils of tomato farming
I live in one of the oldest farming counties in Northern California. In fact, the land where my house was built were fields used for agricultural purposes such as cultivating crops or as a paddock or other enclosure for livestock.
On the perimeter of our neighborhood are fields. I either walk around and inside the neighborhood, or outside of the development and walk in the fields.
This is a tomato field close to my home. It has been in this state for a couple of weeks now. Half of the tomato crop was harvested, with the other half of the field remain unpicked.
It makes one wonder why?
The harvested tomatoes were left in piles along the spacing between the rows of plants.
Why would a farmer leave half of the crops unpicked...
... and allow the harvested tomatoes to rot?
Could it be that the farmer ran out of resources to complete the harvesting process?
Or could it be that the farmer is experiencing a similar market situation such as the one described below of the Florida tomato market in 2017?With prices farmers were receiving for tomatoes dropping to $3 to $5 a box, it made no sense to spend $4 to $4.50 to pick and pack them and lose even more money. A break-even price is about $10 a box. It costs $10,000 to produce an acre of tomatoes.

Alas, I am not a home veggie grower... but I think about it. 😬
I was thinking last night... why can't the farmer set shop right there in the fields? He can have people harvest their own tomatoes for $1.00 a pound or something. The Food Banks need tomatoes. It was a sad walk for sure.

What a cool walk but it does make me wonder why the tomatoes were left like that seems such a waste I wonder if it is because of low prices and its not cost effective to pick them up

Sometimes farmers are paid to NOT grow a certain crop, to reduce supply. Presumably to keep prices stable but as far as .GOV goes, many times they create chaos!

I'm guessing that you're right and that it's an economics thing. I was thinking that it was a timing thing, that they didn't want to sell all their tomatoes at once, but if they didn't even sell the ones that were picked, that's super strange.
Whatever the reason was, it sure made me sad to see the initial investment of the owner go to waste, and all the tomatoes going to waste... when there is so much hunger in the US, @themanwithnoname!

Tomatoes are perishable, it is painful to see it waste.
I know... it made me sad seeing all the tomatoes rotting.
It could become useful if it will be used as seeds for another batch of tomatoes
