Lets just Pretend...

Let's just pretend its a nice summers day and head to the beach for BeachWednesday - led by @lizanomadsoul and initiated by @uwelang
Here we are in the grip of a Polar Vortex dragging temperatures down, but I won't complain about it, in parts of the Midwest here with Windchill the real feel is -60 F which is -51 C, and people have been warned not stay indoors as you can get frostbite in minutes when it is that cold, I am sure they would be happy with our temps of 20F at the moment and its only dropping to 5F, maybe that would seem warm to them and they may head to the beach so, off we go to the beach

This first shot if taken at Gulf Beach the one i visit often as it is just down the road a short drive from where I live, less than a mile so its also easy walking distance.
This couple look set for enjoying a nice evening by the beach, and dehind them across the water is another of the beaches here Fort Trumbulll beach.

Have you heard the term Slip Slop Slap

I am not sure if it is well known but it was big in NZ and Australia during the 80's and was an advertising slogan to get people to take three basic steps to protect themselves from Skin Cancer, and if you haven't heard it, it means

Slip on a Shirt

Slop on Some Sunscreen

Slap on a hat

Trust me its great advice, and I can say that from experience, during the 70's when I was often out running, Swimming or Cycling for rugby in the warmer months, I did one of the three, I always have been big on wearing a cap, but so often was shirtless and didn't use sunscreen back then and am paying for it now with having had quite a few bits of Skin damage removed, and have the next bit chopped off on Friday.

So my advise and weird I am saying this in Winter here, but in other parts of the world it is summer, so if you are going to be out in the sun do Slip, Slop and Slap.

And the second bit of advise since I am in an Advice giving mood, if you notice any changes on your skin, don't ut it off, get it checked, its better to be told its all good, or if they need to do a biopsy and it is skin damage, catch it early and get it taken care of, which I do and one of my regular 6 month Doctors appointments is with a dermatologist.

OK now back to beach shots

Kind of like this couple who were walking along the beach, they were searching the sand on the beach with a metal detector.

For this suffering through this cold spell stay safe and warm, I have the rest of the week at home so I am not planning on going out of the house till Friday when I have my appointment

Many are dreaming of summer but probably not sunscreen :) However, my dad has skin cancer and the first thing they told him was tell your kids to protect themselves from the sun. Btw not to rub in the whole California thing...but it was almost 70F here today

Yes once you have skin cancer or family or friends with it you take it more seriously, I am lucky I caught my first one early and now get checked every 6 months so having 14 bits of skin cancer cut out so far is not a big deal for me as long as I keep on top of it.
I hope your Dads was able to be treated and he is OK

Dad doing good. He has been getting regular check ups and nothing has spread. He was a farmer growing up and spent ALOT of time outdoors. Like sitting on a tractor without a cab all day long with no protection.

Thats good to hear I also worked in Market Gardens for a few years out in the sun

Slip, slop and slap, I love it @tattoodjay. I'll tell my kids this one when they visit :) Stay in and stay warm! 20 is still cold too my friend! Hope your appointment goes well.

Its such an easy to remember saying for sure, and very important down under with the weak Ozone Layer, you can burn so quick there.

This one is a follow up the biopsy came back positive so he will chop it out, I have had 14 of these done before so I am pretty experienced at it and now it will go well :)

I am familiar with the slip slop slap.
I almost quoted it in a post not long ago, but chose not to as i thought it was too unknown. I have learnt from your post here to share these things and make more of an effort to share colloquialisms. Thanks.
I survived many a sunstroke and blistered peeling skin of australia in the 80s. If my kids were burnt to the point of blisters it would be considered abuse, so thankfully it seems the campaign worked.
At some point they brought back the promotion and tried to add Wrap with regards to sunglasses I think, but it didn't catch on like the 80s promo. That was an epic campaign.
The wrap, provided the sunnies are protective and not dodgy are important. I had a friend lose an eye to melanoma.

We bought _Babybands,s for our first child that wrap around, she hated them.
They are good in the snow too for reflective burning glare, we had friends in Canada buy them for their bub, with more success at keeping them on than we had too.

Ps. It is damn hot here. Has been around 40°c most days over the past fortnight. Murderous. We had a poisonous ozone gas warning last week, told to stay indoors.

Glad to hear someone else had heard of it and read that section, not many mentioned it, in the 80;s I had sunstroke a couple of times and with my fair skin i always got sunburnt and blistered quite a few times when I was in my teens and 20;s I guess thats what I am paying for now.

I have been lucky of the 15 bits of skin Cancer I have only had one that was a Melanoma and caught it very quickly, but sadly my brother didn't and it spread through his body and took his life, thats why I am so serious about getting regular checkups for skin damage.
I wasn't aware they had added wrap, it must have come after I started working overseas and I missed hearing about that.

thanks for the kind words, I generally just write whatever comes ot mind as I am preparing the post, sometimes later I do wonder why I said what I said, but I still do it lOL

Thats hot there and I also hadn't heard of poisonous ozone gas warnings, but stay safe and cool, and I will do the opposite, well I will stay safe and warm

I'd take 20F in a heartbeat. Power steering stopped working in my truck this morning because the fluid was so cold. Took about halfway into work before things loosened up! Great shots!

Well glad it loosened up be careful out there, today it dropped was 5F earlier but nothing like what you have

Thank you!

MOst welcome my Friend

Great advice that @tattoodjay, especially as we're in the midst of summer here! Easy to remember Slip slop slap, I've never heard that expression. To think when I was younger, we all used to sit in the sun like that for hours and burn to cinders, crazy not so!
The cold will soon be over

Thanks and yes it is good advise and I was the same when I was younger, and with my pale skin thats why I ma having it show up now, but its all good I am keeping on top of it
