Not stupid at all. Pickles can be any kind of vegetable and they can either be lacto fermented by placing them in a crock and adding salt (or salt water if the veggies are not drawing water on their own). Most people might know Sauerkraut which is fermented that way.
Or veggies can be put in a water, salt, and vinegar brine and either canned or cured. Cucumbers are very popular to preserve like that and for many people, pickles means pickled cucumbers.
