Off Leash Adventures: Pups In Trucks; Episode One - Finding Our New Off Road Spot

in #adventure6 years ago (edited)

Hi Everyone.
This weekend was a hot one here in sunny Southern California. So what better excuse than to get the dogs in the truck, and head off on a new trail for some off leash fun.

After all the rain we had at the start of this year, our usual trail to take the dogs up, to allow them some freedom to roam and run is now inaccessible. There are a number of large dips in the first section of the trail, so deep our friend got his F-150 stuck there, after he got high centered. Now if he got stuck, there is no way I'm trying to get up there in my Suzuki Sidekick! So we needed a new trail to use, and one that is still local to us.
Tuesday night myself and @csusbgeochem1 had took 'Sydney', My Suzuki Sidekick on a test drive to Cleghorn, an area off the 15 freeway in San Bernardino. @csusbgeochem1 had just replaced the head unit on the engine, as it blew a few weeks back. So we needed to see how she drove now the new one was installed, and I figured lets take the dogs out for some off leash roaming. We went to our usual spot at Cleghorn, but it was so sandy there the dogs and truck interior were covered by the time we got home. After cleaning the sand out of Sydney, I didn't want to go there again, so I suggested we take the trail to the right of the freeway this time.
I'd not been up this trail before, so if nothing else it was nice to explore somewhere new.

We started driving along the trail, following it up through the hills.
Here you can see the trail we have driven along, and if you look closely, you can see the freeway in the background:

The trail kept gaining elevation, and after all the rain, the vegetation here had grown, so the valley was a lush green rather than dry and dusty. Both the dogs were excited and had their heads out the windows the whole journey up the trail:

There were even colorful wild flowers growing at the side of the trail, creating a beautiful view:

As we traveled up the trail, @cusbgeochem1 spotted a trail to our left:

He said this gate is usually closed, so he hadn't been up this trail either. Obviously we turned left here.
The trail wasn't in bad condition at all:

As we only had to use 4 wheel drive on one section:

due to the lose rocks and bumpy conditions. We continued on this trail for a few minutes, when it became very flat and open:

We saw a split in the trail up ahead, and decided this would be a good place to stop and let the dogs out. It was open all around so we would see (as well as hear) anyone coming up, and give us time to call the dogs back to us for safety.

I loved the yellow field that was to our left side:

and to our right, two more trails:

The dogs were enjoying themselves, roaming as usual. Buddy always likes to be close by:

While Happy runs as fast as she can in circles, then once her energy is out, she roams as well:

Both the dogs then started to eat the grass, like we had brought them to their own personal all you can eat salad bar:

Buddy eat so much grass, he was then sick....three times! Here he is eating grass (and getting told of for it), even though he was already sick once:

After being sick Buddy now wanted back in Sydney, as he was feeling sorry for himself.
Happy on the other hand was still roaming around:

By now the sun was starting to set:

and the temperature dropped, so we figured it was a good time to leave:

As we drove back down the trail, we both said how nice this area was, and this would be our new local off road spot to bring the dogs when they need to get their energy out. We also use these off road spots as an alternative to walking them in the rain. Usually these trails take you above the clouds, so they are a good place to bring the dogs when its raining so you aren't getting wet while giving them some exercise. But as this location didn't seem to be as high as the trail over at Palm Ave, we will have to wait for some rain to come back and find out for sure.
We got back on to the road as it started to get dark, and the cotton candy pink clouds created a colorful canvas out of the sky.

That is the first time you went 'up' Cleghorn? there are some decent areas to test your 4wd (vehicle and skills) up the route on the way to Silverwood Lake. We should head up there together sometime soon.

Yeah, usually we go down by the train tracks, but I much prefer this area.
That sounds good, Larry mentioned it leads to Silverwood Lake so I told him we need to go over there (not been there either). I'll talk to him when I get home from work and get him to arrange something through discord with you and Cat, maybe Derek will be up for it to.
Multiple Pups in Trucks! :)

Yea, you can do the entire trip without 4wd (on the main road), but there are several offshoots to the main road that you need 4wd for. Its pretty fun.

Sounds it, and it would be good to test the 4x4 with help around, just in case LOL
Lets get it arranged soon!

If I'm not working that day I'd love to go too!!

Yaay!! I'm sure we can do it a weekend you have a day off.
Need to put the manual hubs on Sydney first. I don't like the Auto locking hubs as I'm always "are they really locked?" and never believe they're unlocked, no matter how many times I reverse in a straight line, as instructed.

you got some really awesome photos!! take us with you on your next 4x4 adventure!

Thanks.
We're currently trying to arrange a pups in trucks outing with Cat & Matt. I asked Larry to talk to Matt on Discord to sort out a weekend. let me know when your free (or go on discord) so we can get it penciled in. (we will do another one later as well so Derek can come, as he is busy at weekends with work right now)

i dont have a pup to bring :( WAHHHH. lol.

Borrow one of ours lol

I want the one that takes naps in the car when he's tired :P We'd be a good fit.

LMAO Buddy also just likes to sit in the car, preferably the front seat to. When I first got my Samurai Bud would sneak in to it, when a door was left open, and sleep in there all night. He'd only get out when he got to hot.
Happy likes to give your shoulder kisses as you drive along, they can make you jump, if you aren't used to it. And any time you leave the car (doesn't matter how short or long) more kisses when you get back in :)

hahaha Buddy sounds like a really chill dog. And Happy, well I can see why he's named that! I've recently decided that in addition to a few pups, I need a mini pig too. Ever see a pig out on the trails?

No but where we used to live a neighbor had a pig, it would roam out on the street with all the dogs LOL

I want a little milk cow :) Although Bud is kinda a little moo cow hahahaha
