in #agriculture6 years ago

The training was conduct today in order to train some of the fish traders or fish famers here in Abuja. The program was a huge success and there were many people in attendance.

what is cage culture?

A cage culture is an aquacultureproduction system where fish are held in floating net pens. Cage culture of fish makes use of an already existing water or water bodies to penetrate freely through the net and the fish and the pond permitting water exchange and waste removal into the surrounding water.
Cages are used to culture several types of she'll fish and finish species in fresh, brackish and marine waters. Cages in fresh freshwaters are used for food, fish culture and for fry to fingerling rearing.

The origin of cage culture

The origin of cage culture are a little indistinct. It is possible the early cages were adopted by fishermen as holding structures until fish could be gathered for market. The first true cages for producing fish were seemingly developed in Southeast Asia around the end of the last century. These early cages were constructed of wood or bamboo, and the fish were fed trash fish and food scraps or the culture of other species.
1950s was the year modern cage culture began to be built or constructed with the onset of synthetic materials. In 1960s, United States universities began the research on the cage culture farming of fish. Cage culture farming has been limited now she to the fact that large scale open pond culture is more economical and viable, it then received focus on more on it research.
Today, cage culture is now receiving more concentration by both researchers and commercial farmers. This is happening because there are more demand of fish for consumption, increase rate of decline wild fish farming, more interest being shown by the poor farming countries and for some of the developed country farmers that are limited to resources are also adopting the traditional system of farming by going for a cheaper system of farming which cage culture is just the best to go with. Before damping into the cage culture system of farming, it has to be well understood, it may seems simple but believe me, it was it own challenges too which could lead to a very serious disaster at the end.

Many people were in attendance of the training, most of which are interested in fish farming. The demand for sea foods in general are just too high to ignore. People are now seeing that there is money in agriculture than we believe in before now. It is a great thing to see that governments are now trying to enlighten the fish farmers in Abuja about how to maximize their profit as a fish farmer.

considerations for cage culture

Before venturing to cage culture system of farming, it has to be well considered and understood as there are more of it advantages and disadvantages too before picking as the best method of farming.

Advantages of cage culture

The following are the merits as stated below;
•It's a very simple system that could be practice by a layman.
•It permits many types of water bodies such as ponds, reservoir, lakes, pits etc which could otherwise not harvested.
•sampling and observation of fish are simplified
•It also allows the use of pond for sport fishing or the culture of other species.
•it is not capital intensive to practice.
•There is no need for changing of water

Disadvantages of cage culture

They are as follows;
•The feeds must be nutritionally complete and fresh.
•porching or destruction is a potential problem
•There maybe high spread of diseases and increase of diseases too.

Though, we still have a long way to go when it comes to farming in this country especially fish farming. The market for fish is very high. Yet are still unable to meet up with the demand. The government are not that trying to empower or partner with the potential companies or individuals that could generating a fortune for the government. To be a fish farmer in a large scale requires a lot of fund. Most of the fishes we eat in this country are mostly imported which is not a good way to go for an under develop country like Nigeria. Though, Rome wasn't built in a day but we are still moving there.
