Open letter to AirBnb regarding the new "Community Commitment" thing

in #airbnb8 years ago (edited)

This is an open letter to AirBnb

Context: I've just received an email (copied at the end of this open letter), from AirBnb. The email was so horrible from a Liberty perspective, that I felt compelled to write them back. Here it is:

You guys are going in a dark path by accepting this political correctness BS. Sure it's good to have everyone getting along with everyone else, however, imposing it at someone else's property is wrong and imoral. It's intolerance on its most brutal form.

If I don't want, for any reason, that muslims, or whites, or people with cats etc stay in MY HOUSE, that's entirely MY RIGHT!

Sure you can impose the rules you want. The AirBnb system is your property, but when you ask everyone to accept this new commitment thing, YOU GUYS ARE BEING BIASED. You guys are discriminating. You guys are violating the most important right of civilization: private property.

That's a dark path you guys are in. It's still time to give this terrible idea up.

But again: it's your system. Do with it whatever you want. But can't you see the contradiction in your action? By forcing your rules on other people's property YOU ARE DISCRIMINATING. You are not allowing people to do as they please with their own property! You are being tyrannical and intolerant yourself!

It's still time to defend liberty. Give this new commitment thing up. Be moral. Be tolerant. Be civilized.

Good luck and let reason and intelligence guide your way into the future of your company. A good one. A revolutionary one. But, with this new commitment thing... No more.

The Airbnb Community Commitment

Hi,

Earlier this year, we launched a comprehensive effort to fight bias and discrimination in the Airbnb community. As a result of this effort, we’re asking everyone to agree to a Community Commitment beginning November 1, 2016.

Agreeing to this commitment will affect your use of Airbnb, so we wanted to give you a heads up about it.

What is the Community Commitment?

You commit to treat everyone—regardless of race, religion, national origin, ethnicity, disability, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation or age—with respect, and without judgment or bias.

How do I accept the commitment?

On or after November 1, we’ll show you the commitment when you log in to or open the Airbnb website, mobile or tablet app and we’ll automatically ask you to accept.

What if I decline the commitment?

If you decline the commitment, you won’t be able to host or book using Airbnb, and you have the option to cancel your account. Once your account is canceled, future booked trips will be canceled. You will still be able to browse Airbnb but you won’t be able to book any reservations or host any guests.

What if I have feedback about the commitment?

We welcome your feedback about the Community Commitment and all of our nondiscrimination efforts. Feel free to read more about the commitment. You can also reach out to us at [email protected].

I also was a bit taken aback by that new policy. Private property is at the owners discretion who they may allow to stay. It is ideal to be fair and trustworthy of all but why doesnt airbnb take into account the property manager their own judgement?
