Acoma Pueblo Dance

in #albuquerque5 years ago (edited)

We had a great time today watching the Sky City Buffalo Ram Dance Group perform some traditional dances outside of Albuquerque's Indian Pueblo Cultural Center. This group of youths came from the Acoma Pueblo, about a half hour west of ABQ, where their main town is called Sky City, as it occupies the top of a 365 foot mesa, where the tribe originally sought protection from Apache and Navajo raids. The drum/chanters were adults, but the dancers were all youths mostly in high school. The Center holds traditional Native American dances every week throughout the year, with dance groups from the 19 New Mexican Pueblos as well as Navajo, Apache, and Hopi groups. It's nice to see the youths carrying on their cultural traditions in the modern day. The dance was free to attend and I would highly recommend seeing one if you are in Albuquerque!
