The comprehensive description of Museo Soumaya is that it is a significant private and a non-cultural institution that houses two museum buildings in Mexico City. These buildings are the Plaza Carso and Plaza Loreto. This private museum is renowned in Mexico City as housing 60,000 pieces of artwork dating back to thirty centuries including the Mexican, European, Modern western and the Pre-Hispanic Mesoamerican art. This museum is considered as housing the most comprehensive collections of world art under one roof. In 2013, the museum was renowned for the highest number of visitors that crossed 1.5 million. With such attendance, the museum became one of the frequently visited museums in Mexico, and the international ranking attained the 56th position regarding attendance. In 2015, the number of attendance increased to 5 million.
Although the museum is popular for housing more than 66,000 pieces of art, the majority of the collection shows the dominance of European art ranging from the 15th to 20th century. Alongside, the museum’s popularity is also evident in its presentation of various forms of Mexican art, historical documents and archives, coins and religious relics. In this respect, the museum has great significance in housing the great collection of Pre-Hispanic and colonial era coins.
One of the greatest French Sculptors of all times, Auguste Rodin has displayed his pieces of artwork and sculptures in the museum. Moreover, the dominant artwork that comes under the categorization of European art is the Madonna of the Yarnwinder that is considered extremely valuable and priceless. Many people claim that the worth of the painting is above thirty pounds.
Along with the European art, numerous works by the renowned Mexican artists including Rufino Tamayo and Diego Rivera are also present in the museum. According to the estimation of worth given by the Mexican owner of the museum, the artwork collection is worth more than $700 million.
Many of the visitors believe that this museum is the gem of the Mexico City as the tour in it is just like having a world tour of art galleries. Also, as the European tour is very expensive, this museum is an economical way out to speculate the all-encompassing nature and the themes of the European art and the art of the world under one roof. And the most admirable part of the museum is that it is financed by one of the richest men and the quality and the presentation of artwork is highly commendable.
