Every individual in the state of distress and happiness needs a religious institution where they can bow their head and seek help and gratitude from the higher power. Although the city of Aguascalientes has numerous religious institution, the Aguascalientes Cathedral plays an integral role in society. It is because it is the hub of Catholic beliefs and the majority of the population of the City of Mexico has an inclination towards Catholic beliefs. Thus, situated in the Plaza de la Patria, it is considered as one of the emblematic and iconic architectural building in society.
In 1704, the priest Antonio Avecedo initiated the construction of the cathedral that now stands before us as he strived to create an emblematic institution that encapsulates the Catholic beliefs. The cathedral reached its completion in 1738 under the guardianship of parish priest Manuel Colón de Larreátegui. The attraction within the cathedral is the doppelgänger of the Virgin of the Assumption that was brought from Spain and included as a permanent collection of the temple.
The structural design of the cathedral depicts two spiral towers that depicted a neo-classical design, especially in their curved pediments. The inside of the cathedral depicts a basilica floor plan containing three domes. On these domes, the visitors can sightsee the beautiful decoration of vegetable motifs in abundant quantity and grout reliefs. The most alluring aspect that came from Spain, the portrait of the Lady of assumption hung on a beautiful white marble cypress. The portrait in its grandeur represented the sanctity, purity, and sacredness of the city. At the back side of the High Altar, was the episcopal throne where the priests rest in esteem that highlights his dignified role in the church and the society as a whole. The beautiful choir at the corner wins the heart of the church attendees with the penetrating and melodious voice.
The main entrance of the cathedral as a whole depicts the carving of a pink quarry that comprises of an auction and three bodies. In the adjacent porticoes, the visitors will see that the accesses to the doorway have a highlighting presence of a semicircular arch. These accesses are bordered by smooth columns that give support to entablatures. At each side of the entablatures, there is the presence of florones and fronton.
