This institute enriches the community of Minneapolis by collecting, conserving and presenting the diverse works of remarkable arts from all across the globe. The works in the museum depict fine arts whose purpose is to enhance aesthetics and beauty. It is situated in the region that was earlier the Morrison Park in Whittier neighborhood. The campus on which it is situated covers the area of 8 acres.

As this renowned museum in Minneapolis is funded by the government, it has no admission charges. However, when there are important exhibitions and artworks display that calls for a lot of public attendance, some fee is charged. Photography is one of the permanent collections of the museum and is reserved for scholarly or personal use only.

The institute receives the backing from the Park board Museum fund, museum members and commercial sponsors.

Let us now look at the brief history of the institute and how it evolved and expanded over time.

The institute was originally constructed by the twenty-five citizens of Minneapolis in 1883 who harbored the interest and desire to bring art into the lives of their fellow citizens. At that time the institute was formerly known as Minneapolis Institute of Arts. After almost a century, the museum got its present name and became a symbol of cultural artwork depiction and community involvement.

The museum was officially inaugurated in 1915, and the credit of its construction and neo-classical design went to leading architectural firm in New York, McKim. From that period onwards to 2006, the museum went under series of renovations and expansions as the new east wing was added to the museum existing structure.

The displaying space of the museum increased to 40 percent with the inclusion of over 30 galleries, Photography Room, lecture hall, Art Library dedicated for research and a Print Room.

On the whole, the museum exhibits about 80,000 comprehensive collections of art that cover the 5000 years old world history. The art collections are in the form of decorative arts, painting, textiles, photography, architecture, prints, and patterns. The museum also takes pride in upholding the all-encompassing collections of Asian art that includes ceramics, bronzes, and pottery crafts, carved hard stone sculptures called Jaded and architecture from China. Along with Asian collection, the museum also displays Oceanic arts, African arts and the arts of the Americas.
