The Catholic cathedral is a functional seat of the Archdiocese of the city of San Luis Potosi marking it as an important monument. The church building was erected in the year 1593, and originally it was built as a parish church. The construction of the cathedral later started in the year 1670 and gradually was finished in the year 1730 converting it from Parish church to a Catholic church. There are several changes made in the church with some of the major changes made in the 19th century.

The interiors of the church are adorned with intricately designed influenced by Neoclassical designs. The dramatic orange pinkish exterior of the church make it distinct. The most distinct part of its architecture is the façade that is designed in Solomonic Baroque design with carved statues of apostles on the Carrara marbles. Being the historic center of the state, the church is located on the eastern side situated on the main square of the city. The cathedral was built and dedicated to St. Louis King of France. The façade of the cathedral is strikingly similar to Basilica of Guadalupe located in the Mexico City. The main altar of the cathedral is huge and is composed of a large cypress constructed using masonry. One of the bodies is altar is of St. Louis King of France and the second cypress houses the image of Our Lady of the Expectation. The cathedral has gorgeous bell tower and a second bell tower was again added in the 20th century to honor the Centennial of War of Independence of Mexico.

There are 24 statues of apostles engraved on the cathedral façade. The Neoclassical architecture with a gold layered dome adds to the overall attraction of the church.
