Next to the National Mall, there is the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum where visitors can explore history through large collections of artifacts, historical photographs, items, documents and testimonies of actual survivors of the Holocaust. It contains books, archival video footage, furnishings, personal papers and textiles and a lot more from the period of the Holocaust. Since its opening in 1993, Museum has been visited by over 40 million visitors. It has two exhibitions which are continuously open and others which are rotating, all of them related to the Holocaust. Inside the museum, there is a Hall of Remembrance where you can light candles dedicated to the victims and survivors. The museum has four theaters, in three of them, the Permanent Exhibition is taking place. When you enter the museum, you are given an identification card with the story of the random victim or survivor. Then you go to the fourth floor and start walking through history in chronological order, beginning with the Nazi rise. On the third floor, you can learn about ghettos and the Final Solution, by which Nazis killed over six million Jews in the gas chambers. On the second floor, you can see archival videos from the liberation of Nazi concentration camps, and this is the most disturbing part of the exhibition. It is not recommended for children under the age of 11.

If you take your children with you, there is an interactive exhibition called Remember the Children: Daniel's Story where children learn about Holocaust through the story of the fictional child called Daniel, based on a collection of actual stories from Holocaust. You can also research your family's history in the Resource Center on the second floor or view special exhibition called Americans and the Holocaust where you can learn what America did during this period.

Every Wednesday and Thursday at 11 a.m. there is a special event taking part where you can listen to survivors sharing their stories and talk to them in person. This provides visitors with an emotional experience.
It is open from 10 a.m. to 5:20 p.m every day. Wear comfortable shoes as you will most likely spend around three hours looking at this exhibition. Admission is free, but you have to take time tickets between March and August due to big crowds. There is a paid parking garage across the street for those coming with vehicles. You can take a rest and lunch in the museum's cafe. Visiting this museum is a very moving experience and makes you take a look at the past and the pain and suffering of innocent people.
