The Canton Palace, located in Merida, Mexico, is a Porfirian building which was once the residence of the Cantón Rosado family. It was built in the early 20th century and was given to the government of Yucatan in 1932. It was then converted to the headquarters of the Hidalgo School, and it has now become the home of the Regional Museum of Anthropology of Yucatán after an agreement was signed between the National Institute of Anthropology and History and the Government of Yucatan. The museum was inaugurated in December 1959.

The Canton Palace has an amazing and unique architecture. The construction materials were imported from Italy, Germany, and France. Its design is inspired by the French architecture and has Neoclassical and Baroque elements incorporated into it. The entire design was coordinated by the artist Michele Giacomino. Outgoing balconies, padding system, frontons, floating dovelas in arcs, arquitrabes, curved cornices, open pediments, etc. are some of the design features that are a treat for the eyes.

The museum housed in Canton Palace showcases collections from the Mayan culture. Some of these artifacts include carved stones, ceramic samples, stelae, sculptures, dental mutilation, personal ornamentation, etc. that have been dug out from the archaeological site in the Yucatan Peninsula. These artifacts range from the pre-classic era to the post-classic period. One of the major exhibits showcases the products that were exported and imported in the Maya world as interregional relations were important for the Mayan community. The museum had been remodeled in December 2012, and many new archaeological treasures, photographic galleries, Mayan wardrobes, and vases have been added to the collection.

Canton Palace is closed on Mondays and open from Tuesday to Sunday from 8 am to 5 pm. Children under 13 years of age, teachers, disabled people, and senior citizens are exempt from the entry fee. For all others, the admission fee is $60 pesos per person. School visits and group tours also happen in this museum, the details of which can be found on the museum website. Photography is also allowed in the museum. There is a lot to learn about the Maya community from the artifacts showcased in the museum. Visiting the museum be a knowledgeable trip not only about the Maya community but also the French architecture. Bring your friends and family to this museum to learn more about the Yucatan history and culture during your trip to Merida in Mexico. Your folks will love it.
