Despite having a different body color, black, but Tiger Beetle is also subspecies the same with the Leopard. The black-haired black leopard called the Tiger Beetle. The color on the Beetle Tiger is not completely black. There are leopards that are darker than the base color. Black leopard (Tiger Beetle) in addition to being variants of the Leopard Java is also found in many Leopards in India. Experts suspect the color difference is caused by melanistic pigment.

This large cat belongs to a protected animal from extinction in Indonesia based on Law No.5 of 1990 and PP No.7 of 1999. By IUCN Red list, the Javanese Leopard (Panthera padus melas) is classified under "Critically Endangered" . It is also included in CITES Appendix I which means it should not be traded.

The population of the Leopard of Java is not known with certainty. Data from the IUCN Redlist estimates that the population is under 250 (2008), although some domestic agencies sometimes claim that the number is still above the 500s.

The population of Java leopard is spread in several different areas such as in the National Park (TN) Ujung Kulon, TN. Mount Halimun Salak, TN. Gunung Gede, Petungkriyono Pekalongan Protected Forests, and TN. Meru Betiri East Java.
