Watch this Raccoon swim like a champion!
This raccoon popped out of nowhere and didn't waste any time getting to where he needed to go :) Down the fallen tree, and straight into the cold December water! Then he swims like a champ right at me ;)
The raccoon could have taken 2 other routes that do not involve swimming, so I think raccoons don't mind the water at all :) It's always a treat to catch one in the act! I believe this is a male, because he is by himself whereas the females have little cubs to take care of, though I can't know for sure.

He survived the crossing ;) He must have a good layer of fat under that fur, because he floats like a boat and doesn't seem to mind the cold water :) We've got some tough raccoons here in Vancouver! ;)

Cute little critter! Racoons love water and wash their food! That's why we call it "washing bear" (mosómedve).
They are cute, especially the little cubs :) In french they're called "raton laver" which translated to "washing rat", which is not as nice a washing bear ;)
