How to bring your best friend on vacation with you

If your best friend is anything like our little Jessica, and has even the slightest bit of separation anxiety, then you always have a bitter sweet vacation. As soon as the bags are out in the open and being packed- she already knows that she will be left soon- and starts to shake and hide away from us. This is very traumatic time for her and a time we all dread.

We love her very much and hate seeing her so upset and so have learned that sometimes the best vacations are those in which we all go away together. She is after all our furbaby and gives us so much love that we really don't mind taking her with us.

So here are my tips for bringing your best friend along on holiday with you.

Planning

Always plan for your furbaby in advance. There are various things you will need to arrange such as transport, activities, accommodation and a packing list just for your dogs.

Accommodation

This is the most important aspect that you will need to plan in advance. Not all hotels or apartments allow pets and so it is important to narrow your search on search engines to include only lodging that allows pets. If you have more than one pet or a big pet ask about the pet policy as some places limit the size and number of dogs that they allow.

It also is important to keep your pets needs in mind when booking- do they need a garden or will a walk suffice? Do they have a habit of weeing on carpets and does this place have carpets? How many other pets are normally on the property and how will your pet react to them?

One tip that we have found is to email properties that do not say no pets and ask them if they would allow you and your pet to come with some pictures of your pet. This has worked the best on apartment and house rentals.

Transportation

Where are you going and how will your pets get there? If you are using public transport- find out if they have pet policies and pet ticket prices. If you are driving down make sure that you can stop for a walk every few hours and bring along snacks and water in the car for your pet. Do not eave your pet in the car alone- they can die from heat exhaustion and lack of fresh air. You can also invest in a dog safety belt to keep your furbaby safe in the event of sudden stopping.

If you are flying or crossing boarders- you need to make sure that your pet has all of the necessary documentation and immunizations required by the airline and the other country. I have heard that flying can be very traumatic for pets so it is not recommended if your pet has anxiety.

Activities

When you take your pet along on vacation you are surely not going to keep them locked up in the room all day- so plan some fun pet friendly activities with them. A walk on the beach, going to a park or botanical gardens or eating at a pet friendly restaurant will make your furbaby feel right at home. I you have a pet with long hair and want to take them to the beach-consider doing a summer cut to make sure no beach sand gets stuck in their hair and irritates their skin.

Packing

So obviously you need to bring some things along for your vacation with your best friend. Here is my packing list:

  • Food for the period in daily packets
  • Dog treats for when you eat those ice creams
  • Water and food bowls
  • Water bottle with a bowl for when you are out and about
  • A leash and body harness- the longer the better
  • Pet safety belt
  • Poop bags- yuck
  • Your dogs bed and blanket
  • A towel for your dog on the beach
  • A flea band or shampoo
  • Dog shampoo and brush
  • Your dogs favorite toys
  • Any medication your dog may be on

These are just the ordinary ones I take along with us- you now your pet best and will know what to take along for them. The most important thing is that you are taking them with you and for that they will be forever grateful!

The suggestion for a dog safety belt is IMPORTANT, and worthwhile tip - so kudos on suggesting it.

As to public transport, that's 1 I probably wouldn't have even thought about ... I mean, as to calling & asking IF there are special ticket prices for #dogs. Who knew..

But then, I always just drove my dog in the car ♦♦ Like your BULLET List of items [thanx 4 grt post ] ☻☻
